There is no Chess Club this Wednesday (27th) as the Stoke League is holding a meeting in the Function Room. In other news, our Championship has already caused a surprise, as last year's winner, Stuart, was beaten by Roger. There is still time to join the Championship - speak to Bob.

Now is the time to join our Club Championship as we start again. Two games against each member - one with white and one with black. Played under the same conditions as League matches, so it could be a good introduction to competitive chess over the quiet summer. Tell Bob, our chairman, if you would like to join.

Four Meir players turned out for Staffordshire yesterday, playing Norfolk at a neutral venue in Peterborough. The team narrowly lost at this knock out stage. In the last game to finish, Martin from the Meir was in a tight game with one of their young players, Ivan. Then Martin forgot that he was no longer defending a rook, and it fell. There's always next year.

Friendly against Newcastle - drawn 3 - 3.

A good evening of chess at Newcastle Bridge Club, with Newcastle winning on the top three boards and Meir on the lower three. Detailed results here: https://lms.englishchess.org.uk/lms/fixture/136048

22/04/2026

There is no meeting at the John Marston on 29th April as we have all been invited to play a friendly match at Newcastle that evening. Back to normal the week after on 6th May.

Congratulations to Stuart, who has an unassailable lead at the top of our Club Championship! Played: 13; won: 10; drawn: 2; lost: 1. This winds up our Championship for this year and a new competition starts soon. If you are a "new" player, please let Bob know as soon as possible.

Meir win Division 5 of the Stoke League. A somewhat surprising defeat of Cheddleton D by Crewe L last night, puts the Meir on top of the table, with 18 points, followed by Holmes Chapel C and Cheddleton D, both on 16. We have enjoyed the season and our games against excellent and friendly opponents.
