Rideout Rideout (Creative Arts for Rehabilitation) - Participatory Arts in the Criminal Justice System Rideout eschewed Facebook for many years, but the time has come!

Rideout (Creative Arts for Rehabilitation) is a Stoke-on-Trent based charitable organisation that specialises in arts-based work in, and about, the criminal justice system - especially prison. Founded in 1999 by drama practitioners Saul Hewish and Chris Johnston, the company has a history of creating unusual and exciting arts projects for both prisoners and members of the public alike. They have w

orked both nationally and internationally and their practice is currently the subject of a two year AHRC funded researsh programme led by Dr Sarah Bartley from Central School of Speech and Drama. This page is a place for photos and stories from the company's past as well as a place to engage with their newer projects.

Earlier this year we created a show called Punishment Acts. Made with members of Expert Citizens in association with B-Arts, it was part of Sarah Eddie Bartley AHRC funded Staging Justice programme. It is, without doubt, one of the best projects we’ve ever been involved with.

We are thrilled, therefore, to share Molly de Dios Fisher’s qualitative evaluation of the project that focuses on the experience of the members of Expert Citizens who took part. The report considers key findings around relationships, atmosphere, ownership, autobiography, roles, site, time, and impacts of performance.

A fantastic two days celebrating 50 years of Performance in Prison. Yesterday included a visit to HMP Buckley Hall to see a joyful performance made by prisoners facilitated by the inimitable Kate McCoy. Today was a day of rich reflections and conversations about the work of all those who deign to take theatre into prison. A hybrid event of panels intercut with some creative activity including a collage/zine making session where delegates were asked to consider the next 50 years. All material to be held in the Rideout archive at the Bristol Theatre Collection.

Huge thanks to all the speakers, panel chairs and participants for being so generous with their time. Uber special thanks to Sarah Eddie Bartley and Simon Ruding and the rest of the TiPP team for making it happen.
