Concrete is a local charity, support network and campaigner leading the fight to erase homelessness within Staffordshire and its surrounding areas.

We're delighted to share that Kerry Birtles, who you may already know from her time as Executive Director of Support and Wellbeing, has now moved into a new Group-wide role as Director of Customer, Communities and Safeguarding.

This new role is all about bringing our homes, support services and commitment to safeguarding together, ensuring we deliver the best possible support and outcomes for you.

"I'm delighted to take on this new role and the opportunity it presents. This change recognises the importance of putting customers at the heart of everything we do, while strengthening our focus on communities and safeguarding.”

This weekend, some of our AMAZING team are taking on the famous Potters Arf Marathon in aid of Concrete!

Every pound raised will help us continue making a difference in our local communities and support the work we do every day.

A massive thank you to everyone running, fundraising and volunteering their time this weekend. We know how much hard work goes into training for a challenge like this, and we couldn't be more grateful.

Five of our Peer Mentors have gone on to get paid jobs in the homelessness sector 🙌

Read that again.

Experiences they might once have wished they could erase are now helping them connect with people, challenge barriers and build careers.

Peer Mentoring isn't only about what you can give someone else. It can be something you do for you, too.

Build your confidence. Meet people who get it. Learn new skills. Get training. Find out what you're capable of.

Maybe it leads to work in the sector. Maybe it doesn't. There's no set path you have to follow.

But if you're ready for something new, we'll back you to explore it.

We’re looking for a Move On Support Officer to join the Concrete team and help people take the next step from supported accommodation into a home of their own.

You could be helping someone find the right home, build their confidence and get the practical things in place to make their move a success.

And if you’ve experienced homelessness, supported accommodation and moving into your own home yourself, we’d really like to hear from you. Your journey could give someone else hope for theirs. 💙

Sometimes the best conversations don't happen in a meeting room. They happen over a Big Mac🍔

One of our Peer Mentors recently headed out with someone who needed a bit of one-to-one time away from their supported housing scheme.

No desk between them. No hierarchy. No judgement. Just two people having a real conversation.

Our mentors know what it's like to face homelessness because they've lived it themselves. They don't have all the answers. They're not there to tell someone how to live their life.

But they can listen. They can share what's helped them. And when someone's ready to make a change, they can be right there beside them.

Sometimes a Maccies and a bit of real talk is where it starts.

Been through homelessness yourself? You could bring something to this team that can't be taught in a classroom.

You know that feeling when you realise you don't have to explain yourself?

That's one of Lisa's favourite parts of Peer Mentoring 🙋‍♀️

Our Peer Mentor Coordinator, Lisa, says she sees it when mentors and customers sit down together and start talking about the stuff they've both lived through.

The barriers start coming down. The conversation changes. And sometimes, you can physically see some of that weight lift from someone's shoulders.

Not because everything is suddenly fixed. But because the person sitting opposite them gets it. That's the power of lived experience.

Last night, our incredible Peer Mentor Jamie WON Volunteer of the Year at the BBC Stoke & Staffordshire Make a Difference Awards! 🏆🎉

In 2019, Jamie came to Concrete after experiencing homelessness and addiction. Things were really tough, but with support, determination and a lot of hard work, he rebuilt his life.

These days, Jamie spends his time helping others do the same.

As a Peer Mentor, he supports people who are facing homelessness, addiction and other challenges, using his own lived experience to show them that things really can get better. Whether it's offering advice, having a chat, or simply being someone who understands, Jamie makes a difference to people every single day.

💬 Jamie said: "Volunteering has given me purpose, confidence and a chance to give something back. If sharing my experiences helps just one person realise that things can get better, then it's all worth it.”

We're SO proud of you Jamie, congratulations! 💚

💚 What’s been happening at Concrete?

From summer fun at our young person accommodation and strengthening Peer Mentor support, to helping customers take their next steps towards independence, it’s been another busy month.

We’ve also been working with partners to improve homelessness support and raised £101 to help keep the Concrete Pantry stocked with essentials for people moving into supported accommodation. 🙌
