Beat the Cold

Beat the Cold Beat the Cold is a Staffordshire-based charity with over 20 years' of experience in reducing fuel poverty and cold-related health issues.

Beat the Cold are a Staffordshire based charity, whose aim is to reduce fuel poverty, and cold related ill health. We’re a trusted partner within Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, and surrounding areas, and have over 20 years’ experience in energy advice and support. Beat the Cold is committed to helping those who live in, or are at risk of fuel poverty, or whose health could be detrimentally affecte

d by a cold home. We pride ourselves in going the extra mile to support every service user, regardless of the complexity of their situation. Because of our experience we provided expert witness input into the formulation of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance NG6 , “excess winter deaths and cold related ill health” which continues to be the gold standard in delivering affordable warmth work, and closely reflects our own vision and aims. We work to embed affordable warmth into normal practice, for all housing, health, and social care staff that we encounter, whilst providing them with a single point of contact, that they can trust to see a job through. We are a partner to University Hospital of North Midlands Trust, and Partners of Midlands Partnership Foundation Trust, with referrals to Beat the Cold being part of their standard operating procedures. We have partnered with the Clinical Commissioning Group to support those identified by the “Staying Well Service” in relation to fuel poverty, and cold related ill health. The hubs are being used to target those with a greater chance of being admitted to hospital during the following 12 months and incorporates a “new way of working” in health. Beat the Cold is now embedded into the health and social care environment of Staffordshire, working with both NHS and Social Care partners. Where possible Beat the Cold will work across the currently siloed environments of primary and secondary care, social care and housing, to provide a single point of contact, one stop, affordable warmth service.

Families across Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire are getting better support to stay warm and well thanks to a partnership led by UHNM. 🏠💙

The 'Keep Warm, Keep Well' programme, delivered with Staffordshire Community Energy and Beat the Cold, is making a difference to people’s everyday lives especially for families with children living with asthma.

With a new digital approach using the One Health and Care (OHC), families who may be struggling to keep their homes warm can now be identified and referred directly to Beat the Cold, with a simple text message offering support.

They will receive simple, practical help from advice on managing energy bills to improvements that make their homes warmer, safer and healthier.

This means those most in need can be reached quickly, without the need for traditional referrals, helping remove barriers and making support easier to access.

🗣 Louise Stockdale, head of transformation and sustainability at UHNM, said: “This new digital approach allows us to reach the right families at the right time. It’s quicker, more targeted and makes it much easier for people to access support when they need it most.

“This is about reaching people who really need support and helping them in a way that’s quick, simple and respectful. We’re not just offering short-term help; we’re giving families the tools to stay warm and well for the long term.”

Cold and damp homes can make asthma worse, often leading to missed school days and hospital visits. By helping families improve their home environment, the programme is helping children breathe easier and stay healthier.

🗣 Will Carroll, consultant paediatrician at UHNM, said: “When a child’s asthma isn’t well controlled, it affects every part of their life. Something as simple as being able to properly heat and ventilate a home can make a huge difference. This support helps families create a healthier environment so children can stay well and out of hospital.

"We know that children living in colder homes are more likely to struggle with their asthma. By identifying families earlier and connecting them to support, we can help children stay well and avoid unnecessary hospital visits.”

The programme has already supported hundreds of households, helping families stay warm, reduce costs and improve their wellbeing. This new digital step will ensure even more people get the help they need, when they need it.

Energy-efficient LED light bulbs use up to 80% less electricity than an incandescent bulb and could last up to 10 times longer.

By using less energy on lighting, you can spend more on heating when the cold weather comes.

Top tip: if you’re not in the room for a while, turn out the lights!

We are delighted to share that we won the Collaboration in Community Energy award at this year’s Community Energy Awards. The award was collected by board members Mike Kinghan and Jason Howlett, together with Fiona Miller from the charity Beat the Cold.

This award recognises the strength of our work with University Hospitals of North Midlands and Beat the Cold, and the impact of directing community generated funds into the Keep Warm Keep Well scheme.

Our thanks go to Community Energy England for its continued championing of community energy and for giving voice to groups across the UK. Congratulations to all the other organisations and individuals recognised at last night's awards, and to the many community groups delivering vital support in their local areas.

📣 Our digital health work has been shortlisted for THREE Keele University Breaking the Mould 2025 awards.

Starting with a pilot in spring 2024 targeted towards parents of children with asthma, the work was expanded to over 1000 patients, kindly funded by National Energy Action through the Warm Homes, Healthy Futures scheme, from November 2024.

Working with North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust, Moorcroft and Moss Green medical practices, Louise Stockdale (Webster) and Fiona Miller developed this transformational project working with patients through primary care. By targeting specific health conditions that are susceptible to the detrimental impacts of cold, this preventative healthcare model seeks to alleviate inundation in the healthcare setting by working with patients in the community.

Powered by Graphnet Health software through a digital fuel poverty dashboard on Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care System ‘One Health and Care’ digital shared care records, patients are identified according to their risk level and following an opt-out period, are contacted by the Beat the Cold team of qualified Energy Advisors who deliver a fuel poverty intervention. Between November 24 and August 25, the team delivered £418,690 in potential savings and grants, with 62% of patients self-reporting an improvement to their wellbeing.

We are absolutely delighted to be ‘Finalists’ in the Health and Wellbeing, Digital Futures, and Leading Innovation categories. Thank you to everyone who has made this project possible! Congratulations to all other finalists: https://www.keele.ac.uk/business/breakingthemould/ -2025-finalists

We’ve been out at another round of health events around the county these past couple of weeks for the NHS ‘Winter Ready’ campaign.

Some of our team members, including Emma, Julie, Jules, Karen, Jo, Adeba and Sandra have been speaking with patients who were invited by their PCN or Social Prescriber for a health check. As part of our work, we’ve been ensuring that local people are geared up and ready for winter, to protect against detrimental health impacts of cold weather.

Thank you to Mercian PCN, Stoke South West PCN, Newcastle South PCN, Leek & Biddulph PCN, Rugeley & Great Haywood PCN, Cannock Villages PCN, Stafford South PCN, Stafford Central PCN, and Stafford Town PCN for inviting us along.
