One of our Reader Ambassadors will share his reading journey in a new BBC documentary, airing today on BBC2 and iPlayer. Peter learned to read with Read Easy Merseyside.

Marking the National Year of Reading 2026, the documentary sees Her Majesty Queen Camilla explore the transformative power of reading, meeting four remarkable people, including Peter, whose lives have been changed by books at moments when they most needed them. The film explores how reading can lift us, open our minds and, sometimes, change the course of a life.

The film also explores the growing scientific evidence that demonstrates how reading can improve health and wellbeing.

We want to thank Peter for his willingness to share his story so publicly and express our gratitude to everyone involved in the production for their commitment to telling a story about an adult learning to read.

The Book That Changed My Life is now available on iPlayer and will be shown on BBC 2 at 9pm Wednesday 14th October.

What actually happens when you come to Read Easy?

Less than most people fear.

• You meet one coach — the same person every time, not a rota of strangers
• Half an hour, twice a week, at a library or another quiet public place
• You start exactly where you are, whether that's letters or whole sentences
• Nobody is asked to read aloud in front of a group. There's no test and no homework
• It's completely free and completely confidential

That's the whole thing. No classroom, no register, no judgement.

If you'd like to talk to someone about it, quietly: [email protected]

One certainty we can rely on through life is that there will always be a form to fill out somewhere. A job application. Health and safety forms. Documents for work.

Adults who struggle with reading have told us that they find forms difficult. This can create disadvantages that hold people back from progression.

Read Easy is here to help through free, confidential and one-to-one reading coaching. Last year, 96% of Readers told us they felt more confident after learning to read. Interested in helping others to reach for their dreams? Visit our website to see how you can support Read Easy.

Diagnosed with dyslexia just weeks before her GCSEs, Paula left school unable to read.

At school, she was put at the back of the class and called "lazy".

For years, she carried the weight of shame and low self-worth, hiding her struggles from everyone except a tiny circle of trusted friends, family and colleagues.

At 42, everything changed.

With the support of adult reading charity Read Easy UK, Paula learned to read. Today, she is a proud Reading Ambassador empowering others to take that same step.
