Stoke Poges Singers

Stoke Poges Singers We are an SATB choir and welcome all singers of varying ability. We do not audition. Our motto is “Singing for Pleasure' We look forward to seeing you.

The choir was founded in 1971 and meets weekly on a Thursday evening for rehearsal. We perform on average four times a year, raising money for locally based charities. All the money from our ticket sales is passed on. The choir has a varied repertoire from the classical to shows and pop music. Not only do we perform at concerts, we also sing at special events too. Why not come along and enjoy the

experience of a friendly, fun choir, you will be made to feel welcome. Our rehearsals run from 7:45pm to 9:45, Thursday evenings at St. Andrew’s Church Centre, Rogers Lane, Stoke Poges, SL2 4LN. Come and join us, visit our website for more details. Fiona Roitt, Chairman

Stoke Poges Singers are very proud to announce that we raised a total of £1200 for BucksVision (South East Division) from the proceeds of our Glorious Vivaldi concert back in November. We were keen to support our local Division of BucksVision as we've seen first hand the wonderful they you do - and our President, Ken Morris, was a volunteer there for many years before his recent death.

It was so lovely to be invited to sing some carols and Christmas songs at Signature at Farnham Common. We received such a warm welcome and had a very attentive audience. We were very well looked after indeed. It's really got us all in the Christmas spirit. (And our MD got to shake Frederick Forsyth's hand too!)

During the last year Stoke Poges Singers have enjoyed being one of three local causes chosen to benefit from the Co Op Local Community Fund. We would like to thank everyone involved from the Co Op and also everyone who selected us as their chosen cause which has helped raise a sizable donation for the choir.

We enjoyed support from our local Co Op store in Stoke Poges who donated several raffle prizes over the year which helps us raise money at our concerts for other charities, and over the last year
we have been able to donate over £4,500 to primarily local charities chosen by members of the choir.

We are extremely grateful for all support for the choir which allows us to keep membership costs as low as possible while continuing to “Sing for Pleasure”. We are open to all so if you think you would enjoy singing, give us a try. All details on our website:

Stoke Poges Singers are looking for amateur orchestral players to be part of Stoke Poges Chamber Orchestra for a concert at St James Church Gerrards Cross on Saturday 25 March 2023. The concert features three works by Estonian composers written within the last 100 years: Arvo Pärt’s haunting "Da pacem Domine" (2004) for choir and orchestra (6 minutes), Erkki-Sven Tüür’s "Symphony No.1" (1984) for orchestra (26 minutes) and in the second half, the beautiful "Requiem" (1927) by Cyrillus Kreek (45 minutes). A wonderful Estonian triptych with the Tüür and Kreek both being UK premieres!

We are looking to get together a full symphony orchestra (double woodwind, brass, timpani & percussion, harp and strings) on the day to rehearse this repertoire in the morning (1000-1300 – orchestra only) and afternoon (1400-1700 – with choir) and with a performance in the evening (1900-2115). Rehearsals and performance are all at the magnificent St James Church Gerrards Cross (SL9 7DJ).

Please DM us directly if you are interested in taking part. We may be able to help with expenses, especially for players 30 years of age and under thanks to a grant from "Heart of Bucks".

On Saturday 25 March 2023 Stoke Poges Singers are performing the UK Premiere with orchestra of the beautiful Requiem (1927) by Estonian composer Cyrillus Kreek. The concert will be conducted by our musical director, Andy Langley, and the choir will be accompanied by the Stoke Poges Chamber Orchestra, with the venue being the beautiful St James Church in Gerrards Cross. The concert will also include another UK Premiere for orchestra alone by contemporary Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür (his Symphony No.1 of 1984) and will start with Arvo Pärt’s haunting Da pacem Domine for choir and orchestra from 2004. A wonderful Estonian triptych!

Stoke Poges Singers would welcome additional singers joining us this term to sing in this very exciting event. The choir meet on Thursday evenings at St Andrews Hall, Rogers Lane, Stoke Poges, SL2 4LN from 20:00-21:45, with rehearsals starting for this concert on Thursday 5 January 2023 and continuing for twelve rehearsals before the day of the concert – plus a final tutti rehearsal with the orchestra on the afternoon of the concert at St James. We would expect new singers to join us for ideally at least six of the twelve Thursday night rehearsals plus the compulsory tutti rehearsal. Rehearsal aids are available in the form of MP3 rehearsal files and YouTube videos for each part in each movement.

We have been very fortunate in securing a grant from "Heart of Bucks, Stoke Park in the Community Fund" to support us for this concert and especially to attract younger adult singers to take part. We are therefore able to waive our normal termly subscription fee (£40) for singers under 30 for this term.

For more information about Stoke Poges Singers, please visit our website at www.stokepogessingers.org.uk. Recordings of Cyrillus Kreek’s Requiem can be found on YouTube, in Latin and in Estonian. (We will be singing the Requiem in Latin! 😀)

An amazing £1300 raised for Thames Valley Adventure Playground at our Songs of The Cities concert on 19 November. Great singing from the choir buoyed up by the wonderful musicianship of our resident ensemble, Stoke Poges Chamber Orchestra (leader Emily Eastburn-Pentreath) and soloists Jasmine Huxtable-Wright (cor anglais) and John Sayer (trumpet) in Copland's Quiet City. Another great night.

Stoke Poges Singers are looking for a few additional string players to join the chamber ensemble assembled for our concert on Saturday 19 November taking place at St Andrew's Church Hall in Stoke Poges, SL2 4LN.

Our concert is titled Songs of The Cities and we'll be performing an eclectic mix of fun songs on the theme of cities around the world and city life. As well favourites like "Streets of London", "Jerusalem" and "Wonderful Copenhagen", we have "The World Outside" (theme from "The Warsaw Concerto") as well as ensemble only pieces: Mahler's "Adagietto" (as featured in "Death in Venice"), Copland's "Quiet City", the final movement of Haydn's "London Symphony" in the arrangement by Salomon, plus an arrangement of the atmospheric "Warszawa" from the Bowie/Eno album Low.

All ticket proceeds from the concert will go to Thames Valley Adventure Playground. (Registered Charity 278336)

There is a midday ensemble only rehearsal on the day (12:00-13:30) and an afternoon one with choir (14:00-17:00). The concert is 19:30-21:45. If you're interested in joining us DM us on Messenger or email [email protected].
