May has been a brilliant month for us here at Autism Matters! 🥰

After what felt like a very long winter, it’s been great to finally see some sunshine across Teesside. We’ve been making the most of the brighter days with plenty of walks, trips out in the community and time spent enjoying the great outdoors. Many of our members have also been taking part in May Miles, getting their steps in, setting personal goals and making the most of the lovely weather along the way ☀️

Our services have been packed with fun this month, with people getting active, trying new things and making lasting memories along the way. We've been playing sports, hitting the gym, enjoying meals out, dancing at AMHQ and heading off on adventures to places like Forbidden Corner. Every activity is centred around what our members enjoy most, making each experience meaningful, personal and enjoyable ❤️

Here are our May Highlights: 📸

As part of Volunteers’ Week, Autism Matters is very proud to be taking part in the Volunteers’ Fair today at Wellington Square! 🫶

Our fantastic fundraiser, Paul, is there until 2 pm to chat about all things volunteering at Autism Matters. You'll find him at our stand with plenty of information about our services, opportunities to get involved, and, of course, lots of fidgets to have a play with 👋

Events like this are a brilliant opportunity to connect with our local community, share what we do, and start conversations that can make a real difference 💙

If you're attending today, be sure to pop over and say hello. Paul would love to meet you and answer any questions you may have! 💬

This week’s Moments That Matter is all about: Embrace ☀️

At Autism Matters, we encourage autistic adults to embrace opportunities, experiences, and the world around them in ways that work for them.

Sometimes that means trying something new. Sometimes it means spending time with friends. And sometimes it can be as simple as getting out into the community, enjoying the sunshine, and treating yourself to an ice cream on a warm day 🍦

This photo captures exactly that. Member, Max, taking a moment to relax, enjoy the weather, and make the most of a day out in the community whilst using our 1:1 PA Service.

Spending time outdoors can have a positive impact on both physical and mental well-being. Fresh air, movement, nature, and a change of scenery can help boost our mood, reduce stress, and give us a chance to recharge.

At Autism Matters, we believe our person-centred support should be about helping people enjoy life, explore their communities, and embrace the things that bring them happiness ❤️

This week’s Moments That Matter is all about: Wellbeing 💪

At Autism Matters, supporting autistic adults to live healthy and fulfilling lives is an important part of what we do. That looks different for everyone, which is why we encourage people to explore activities that work for them to make them feel good both mentally and physically 🧠

This photo shows one of our members, Tom, during a session at tornado fitness, giving the battle ropes a go and fully getting involved. Sessions like these are not just about exercise. They are about building routine and confidence, and finding enjoyable ways to stay active.

For many autistic adults, traditional gym environments can feel overwhelming or inaccessible. That is why having the right support alongside them can make such a difference. It creates opportunities to try new things and discover activities they genuinely enjoy. With the amazing help of Mall at Tornado, members are encouraged to get involved at their own pace in a welcoming and understanding environment 🏋️

At Autism Matters, we believe promoting healthy lifestyles is important and should also be fun, supportive, and person-centred ❤️

Day 4 in Copenhagen with Autism Matters 🇩🇰

Yesterday was the group’s final full day in the Danish capital and it was another one packed full of exploring, laughter, and plenty of memorable moments 😆

After breakfast at the hotel, everyone headed out towards the famous Nyhavn street, known for its colourful houses lining the harbour. The group loved hearing how the different coloured buildings were originally designed before street numbers even existed ⛵️

On the way there, the group stumbled across what felt like absolute paradise for some of our members… Faraos Cigarer 🤩 The market-style shops were filled with everything from trading cards, figures, comics, and board games to Harry Potter memorabilia, Funko Pops, manga, World of Warcraft items, and so much more. Safe to say, everyone could have spent hours in there!

After a very thorough browse, the group continued on to Nyhavn where they enjoyed lunch sat along the beautiful harbour, soaking up the atmosphere and views 🌊

Even a huge downpour of rain couldn’t dampen spirits as the sightseeing continued before the group headed off for their final big activity of the trip, a canal cruise around Copenhagen 🚤

The cruise gave everyone the chance to relax while learning lots about the history of Denmark. Along the route, the group passed warships, naval submarines, opera houses, and some incredible Danish architecture. The tour was topped off with a visit to Copenhagen’s most famous landmark, The Little Mermaid 🧜‍♀️

After a quick freshen up back at the hotel, members decided there was only one place they wanted for their final tea in Copenhagen… Tivoli Food Hall! 🍕🌮 The evening was spent enjoying favourite foods, chatting about the best moments from the trip, and reminiscing about another amazing Autism Matters short break abroad 🤍

Day 3 in Copenhagen with Autism Matters 🇩🇰

Yesterday was a slightly slower-paced day for the group, giving everyone the chance to take in even more of beautiful Copenhagen while still fitting plenty into the day!

After breakfast at the hotel, the group headed out for a gentle walk through the stunning Rosenborg Castle Gardens, also known as The King’s Garden. Everyone enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, colourful flowers, and lovely scenery while taking their time exploring the gardens. From there, they visited Rosenborg Castle, where they learnt more about Danish history and explored the impressive treasury inside the castle 🏰

For lunch, the group stopped off at Burger King before heading into the city centre for some souvenir shopping. There were lots of shops to browse and plenty of gifts and treats picked up along the way. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a lovely walk back to the hotel through the beautiful green area of Ørstedsparken, taking in more of Copenhagen’s scenery and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere 🛍️

Back at the hotel, the group had some downtime to rest and recharge before heading back out into the city for tea at Carambar. Later in the evening, there was time for a quick stop at Netto and 7-Eleven to pick up snacks and drinks before another relaxed stroll back through the city lights 😋

The day finished with some lovely social time back at the hotel, where everyone chatted together about their favourite parts of the trip so far and shared lots of laughs before settling down for the night 💤
