The government’s announcement today, that Police and Crime Commissioners are to be abolished at the end of their current term in 2028, will mean a major change to policing governance. Police and Crime Commissioners have held chief constables to account since 2012 and UNISON has worked well with many PCCs over the intervening years. Our members who work in the Offices of Police and Crime Commissioners will be particularly concerned at the implications of today’s announcement for their futures. UNISON will be seeking early engagement with the Home Office to understand how our members’ interests will be protected going forward. In relation to the proposed changes, UNISON will work with all police stakeholders to ensure that the democratic model of police accountability remains strong and effective.

Police Staff Council - Pay 2025

Below the new pay spine following agreement on the 2025 pay settlement and other details of the agreement.

• A 4.2% pay increase on all pay points on the PSC pay spine with effect from 1 September 2025.

• A 4.2% increase on Standby Allowance from £36.13 to £37.65 as of 1 September 2025.

• An increase of £10 on the Overnight Away from Home Allowance from £50 to £60 (as of 1 September 2025).

• The Essential user car allowance set out in Section 7 of the Handbook and described at paragraph 3 will be consolidated into one band for all vehicles irrespective of engine size – using the allowances currently detailed for vehicles 1200 – 1450 cc (which is currently £1239 per annum).

Any pay points above point 45 that have been constructed in accordance with the Police Staff Council Handbook (Part Three) should also be increased by 4.2% from 1 September 2025.
