Steel Valley Project Purchases Woodland Thanks to Generous Support from the Craik Family
The Steel Valley Project is delighted to announce the purchase of Stone D**e Wood, a beautiful 2.73-acre woodland near Grenoside in South Yorkshire. Made possible through the generous support of the Craik family, long-standing supporters of the charity, the acquisition marks a major milestone as the first site ever purchased by the Steel Valley Project in its 38-year history.
This first land purchase represents an exciting new chapter for the charity, creating opportunities to protect, enhance and manage an important natural space for the benefit of wildlife and local communities for generations to come.
Stone D**e Wood is a secluded woodland haven, featuring tranquil oak glades, a small stream and rich wildlife habitats. The woodland includes mature oak trees alongside beech, birch and hazel, with a diverse ground flora characteristic of ancient woodland, including species such as wood anemone and wood sorrel. It also provides a refuge for woodland birds and wildlife, with evidence of a wide range of species already present on the site.
Importantly, Stone D**e Wood forms part of a much larger woodland landscape on the northern edge of Sheffield, sitting within a vast woodland complex that includes Wharncliffe Woods and Greno Woods. This wider network of woodland habitats provides valuable ecological connectivity, supporting wildlife movement and strengthening biodiversity across the area.
For the Steel Valley Project, ownership of Stone D**e Wood will help secure the long-term future of an important local habitat and provide opportunities to demonstrate practical conservation management, habitat restoration and community engagement.
