In 2001, after witnessing the humanitarian crises in Bosnia and Kosovo, a group of international healthcare professionals recognised that effective humanitarian healthcare required more than medical expertise. It required listening to communities, respecting local cultures and working alongside local partners to strengthen health systems.

That belief became the foundation of Doctors Worldwide. Twenty-five years later, our mission remains the same.

This yearโ€™s World Humanitarian Day theme, , is a reminder that humanitarian action starts with people, standing alongside communities, responding to their needs and working together to build a better future.

This World Refugee Day, we recognise that refugees and internally displaced people remain among the most marginalised and vulnerable groups in our global society, facing immense barriers to basic human rights, including healthcare.

At Doctors Worldwide, we believe sustainable humanitarian action means investing in local healthcare workers. Through our Postgraduate Fellowship (PGF) in Refugee and Migrant Health, we supported doctors serving Rohingya refugees and host communities in Bangladesh, equipping them with the skills to respond to complex humanitarian challenges.

Over 3 years, the PGF created lasting impact:

129 healthcare leaders trained, strengthening local capacity and health systems
900,000+ patient consultations delivered to displaced and host communities
20%+ increase in clinical knowledge and diagnostic standards
40% of graduates advancing into medical leadership and policy roles within international and UN agencies

By supporting local doctors with the PGF training programme, we helped to ensure that the right to health remains protected for vulnerable communities. Access to quality healthcare is not a privilege. It is a human right.
