Today (23 June), we remember Alan Turing on what would have been his birthday.
Widely regarded as the father of modern computing and artificial intelligence, Turing played a crucial role in cracking the Enigma code during World War II, helping to shorten the war and save countless lives.
Despite his achievements, Turing was prosecuted in 1952 for being gay and subjected to chemical castration.
He died aged 41 in 1954 from cyanide poisoning, in a death officially ruled as s*icide.
