🎦 There’s not one but TWO showings of thought-provoking, non-traditional, much-talked-about art heist film The Mastermind, at Stockbridge Community Cinema later this month. 🎥
Set in 1970s Massachusetts, Kelly Reichardt’s movie follows JB Mooney (Josh O’Connor), an unemployed carpenter, husband and father who decides to reinvent himself as an art thief. 🖼️
His target is four paintings by modernist artist Arthur Dove, hanging in a sleepy local museum. 🏛️
JB carefully studies the gallery, recruits a small crew and convinces himself he has planned the perfect crime. 🎨
But this is no slick Hollywood heist. The robbery itself is almost beside the point.
Once the paintings are stolen, JB’s carefully constructed world begins to unravel.
His accomplices disappear, the police close in, and his attempts to stay one step ahead become increasingly desperate. 👮♀️
Meanwhile, his family life and responsibilities expose just how badly he has misjudged both himself and his situation. 😩
Josh O’Connor gives a wonderfully understated performance as a man whose confidence far exceeds his competence, while Alana Haim brings warmth and realism to his increasingly frustrated wife, Terri.
Dryly funny, quietly tense and beautifully observed, The Mastermind turns the traditional heist movie inside out.
Rather than celebrating the crime, Reichardt explores ego, failure, family and the consequences of believing you’re smarter than everyone else. 🤔
The film is showing at 4.45pm and 7.30pm, at Stockbridge Town Hall, on Wednesday 26 August 🎥
