Thank you. This Refugee Week, we celebrated acts of courage — big and small.

This is our heartfelt thanks to the members of our community who took their own courageous step by sharing what finding a home in Forth Valley means to them.

It’s also a thank you to the agencies, partners, organisations, and individuals who helped make our Words of Welcome exhibition possible.

Community happens when people come together, and we are genuinely overwhelmed by the support we’ve been able to curate and showcase. Together, we’ve created something meaningful, visible, and full of hope.

Today, on 20 June, we recognise World Refugee Day.

This is a day to highlight the experiences of people who have been forced to flee and to reaffirm our commitment to safety, dignity and inclusion.

Across Central Scotland, refugees and people seeking asylum are rebuilding their lives, contributing skills, culture and community strength. World Refugee Day reminds us of the work we all share: creating welcoming spaces, challenging misinformation, and ensuring everyone has the chance to participate fully in our society.

The UNHCR leads international action to protect people forced to flee conflict and persecution, as well as those denied a nationality, working to ensure their rights and safety.

Together, we can build communities where people feel safe, valued and able to thrive.

Refugees are…

Refugees are people who have been forced to leave their homes because of war, persecution, or danger, often making difficult journeys in search of safety. Becoming a refugee is never a choice; it is an act of survival.

Refugees bring strength, skills, culture, and resilience to the communities they join. But they also face barriers: navigating new systems, rebuilding their lives, and overcoming prejudice or misunderstanding.

At CSREC, we support refugee communities across Central Scotland by offering confidential advice, advocacy, and guidance; delivering training that builds understanding; and working with partners to create welcoming, inclusive environments where everyone can thrive.

Our dedicated advocacy team also provides training on the refugee journey, helping people understand the realities behind the decisions refugees make and challenging the misinformation that often shapes public narratives about who a refugee is.

This Refugee Week, we’re reflecting on this year’s theme — Courage — and the simple acts we can all take to show solidarity and support.

This Refugee Week our act of courage, our Words of Welcome exhibition is now open at Forth Valley Royal Hospital, showcasing creative responses from across Central Scotland. The four week exhibition brings together:

- open letters from organisations championing the rights of refugees and racialised communities

- bookbinding work exploring displacement, travel, and roots

- Community artwork reflecting on welcome, belonging, and inclusion

Co curated with , our exhibition celebrates the strength and diversity of our communities and highlights the importance of visibility at a time of rising tensions.

We invite residents and visitors across Central Scotland to visit the exhibition, reflect on the stories shared, and consider the small acts of courage we can each take to help make our region a more welcoming place for all.

Refugee Week 2026 begins today — and this year’s theme is Courage.

Courage can be quiet or bold. It can be a single small act or a life changing decision. For people experiencing uncertainty, displacement, or conflict, courage is often what carries them forward.

This , we’re all invited to reflect on the simple acts of courage we can take to show solidarity with refugee communities.

Our values shape how we stand alongside individuals across Central Scotland as they navigate challenges, understand their rights, and access the support they need.

The impact of this work is best reflected in the voices of the people we support:

“Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart. I really appreciate what you have done for me and my daughter.”

These words speak to the heart of CSREC’s mission: To promote racial equality, challenge racial discrimination, and foster good relations between diverse communities through education, advocacy, and community engagement.

We’ve teamed up with 11 incredible local and national organisations to create a powerful letter‑writing campaign for our Words of Welcome exhibition.

These open letters to the Forth Valley celebrate the strength of inclusion, and the difference we make when we choose to welcome one another.

Alongside these letters, the exhibition brings together creative responses, community voices, and words of welcome in many languages spoken across Central Scotland. Each contribution reflects lived experience, identity, and the many ways culture is shared and celebrated.

You can explore Words of Welcome from 25 May to 23 June 2026, proudly displayed across Forth Valley Royal Hospital, including throughout Refugee Week (15–21 June).

A huge thank‑you to , , , , , and everyone who contributed their creativity, time, and heart to this collaborative showcase of welcome and inclusion.

Microaggressions are…

Microaggressions are small, often unintentional comments or actions that make someone feel excluded, disrespected, or “othered” because of their race, ethnicity, skin colour, culture, or other aspects of their identity.

They may seem minor in isolation, but their cumulative impact reinforces stereotypes, creates barriers, and contributes to unequal experiences for racialised communities.

At CSREC, we work to challenge microaggressions and all forms of racism by supporting individuals, educating communities, and addressing the systems that allow discrimination to persist. We offer confidential advice and advocacy, deliver training that builds understanding and good practice, and work with partners across Central Scotland to promote fairness, dignity, and equality.

Racism is…

Racism means treating someone unfairly or differently because of their race, ethnicity, or skin colour. It includes harmful attitudes, behaviours, and systems that create barriers and unequal outcomes for racialised communities.

At CSREC, we work to prevent and challenge racism by supporting individuals, educating communities, and addressing the systems that allow discrimination to persist. We provide confidential advice and advocacy for anyone experiencing racial prejudice, deliver training that builds understanding and good practice, and work with partners across Central Scotland to remove barriers and promote equality.
