This is Colleen!

She’s our Young Carers Team Leader and has been supporting Stirling’s young carers since March 2015!

Most memorable moment with SYC:
"There’s been so many amazing memories over the years with SYC but for me one of the best memories is having the privilege of being able to attend the Scottish Young Carers festival each year with a group of amazing young people who get the opportunity to really have a proper break and time to themselves, this festival is such a valuable experience to so many of our young carers and they talk about it for years afterwards"

Favourite food:
"Chicken fajitas." 🌯

Hobbies outside of work:
"Outside of work, I’m a mum to two kids and love spending time on family days out and holidays, making amazing memories together."

Favourite saying:
"A wee bit of kindness goes a long way!" 💛

Most memorable moment with SYC:
"Building a raft and paddling out onto Loch Linnhe… just before it collapsed and everyone fell in. Should have spent more time on the knots!"

Dream holiday destination:
"The island of Komodo—I’d love to see a Komodo dragon."

Hobbies outside of volunteering:
"Cooking. I’m a big fan of Ottolenghi’s cookbooks and try to do a recipe each week."

This is Shannon!

She’s been a Young Carers Officer with Stirling Young Carers since October 2023.

Most memorable moment with SYC:
"I went on a 4-night residential trip to Hopscotch with 12 young carers. The group had an amazing time—we went to the beach, did yoga, went horse riding, and even took a gondola ride up the Nevis Range!

We stayed in a big house with a huge play park in the garden, and eating all our meals together made it feel really special. One of my favourite moments was playing hide and seek around the house!

It was such a great experience, and I loved supporting the group and seeing the impact the trip had on them."

Hobbies outside of work:
"I love reading, gaming, playing rugby, and going to the gym. I also train for Strongwoman competitions."

Go-to takeaway order:
"Manhattan Burger Meal from Smokey’s—no mayo!"

Spirit animal:
"Red panda—like the ones in Turning Red."

A Young Carer is someone under 18 who helps look after a family member who needs extra support—this could be due to illness, disability, mental health, or addiction.

This might mean helping at home, supporting someone emotionally, or looking after a sibling.

Over the last few weeks, our primary-age young carers have been out enjoying the sunshine at the park ☀️

Sometimes, it’s just about having the chance to be a kid—to play, laugh, and switch off.

Many young carers miss out on everyday moments like these, which others might take for granted. That’s why opportunities like this matter so much 💛

We’re looking forward to the brighter days ahead and many more evenings like these!
