Do you know the signs of an overdose?

Today is Overdose Awareness Day and we want to make sure as many people as possible know the signs of an overdose:

Deep snoring/gurgling noises

You can’t wake the person up, and they don’t respond if you shake their shoulders or call their name

A blue tinge to the lips, nail beds or other extremities

They have stopped breathing.

If you think someone has overdosed, call 999 and wait for an ambulance. You can also give them naloxone, but this will only be effective if they have taken opioids or drugs contaminated with synthetic opioids.

If you think someone is overdosing but you aren’t sure what they’ve taken, you can still give them naloxone. It won’t hurt them, and it could help them.

Do you know what the signs of overdose are? For opioids, they can include:
- not responding
- cold or clammy skin
- irregular, shallow, or slow breathing
- snoring or gurgling sounds (can appear like deep sleep)
- blue/pale or grey/ashen lips or fingertips.
Use naloxone if you have it and call an ambulance because naloxone only temporarily reverses overdose. Overdose deaths are preventable when we know the signs!
