Young Carers' Crew - North Herts & Stevenage

We give young carers in North Herts & Stevenage a place just for them. Registered charity: 1176778 Would you like to use your skills to make a difference?

A young carer is someone aged 25 or under who helps look after a member of their family who is ill, disabled, or uses drugs or alcohol (http://ycih.org/am-i-a-young-carer/). We run fortnightly group sessions to provide a safe space where 8 to 18 year-old carers can just have fun and take a break from their caring role. We welcome referrals for children from Stevenage and North Hertfordshire. Get in touch and find out how you can become a volunteer playworker or trustee - our group can't exist without them! No experience is needed and we'll help you become comfortable in your new role with support and training.

Our annual charity spectacular, Curtain Call – A New Musical, opens next Thursday, 29th October, at St Francis’ College Theatre in Letchworth.

Variety Express is run entirely by volunteers, all giving their time and talents to raise much-needed funds for local charities.

This year, we’re proudly supporting two wonderful causes:

September 2026 - second session:

The young carers had a great session with a visit from Next Page Books!! There were some great conversations about books overheard and it was lovely to see the excitement from everyone choosing which books to take home. Thank you to Ken Follett for his very kind generous donation that meant this book fair could take place ❤️❤️!

September 2026 - first session:

We had a lovely seventh session with BEEEcreative as part of the project. We enjoyed doing some collage and writing about our memories of green spaces in Stevenage. We also got to go outside, enjoy our very own green space, and play some games using the large parachute - there were certainly lots of giggles. Thank you to Anji Archer and Maga Radlowska - Judd for running a great session ❤️❤️!!

MCR Pathways is urgently looking for volunteer mentors across Hertfordshire, with a particular need in Stevenage and Cheshunt. Mentors meet with a young person in school for one hour each week during term time, offering consistency, encouragement and someone firmly in their corner.

No previous mentoring experience is needed — full training, safeguarding checks and ongoing support are provided.

July 2026 - 2nd session:

The young carers had a great last session before the summer holidays ☀️🫐🍓!!
Thank you to for an amazing session. It was great to see the young people cooking chicken kebabs and sausages on bbqs. They also got to make some tasty fruit kebabs drizzled with icing.

I wish all the young carers a lovely summer holidays and look forward to seeing you all back in September 🌞!!

July 2026 - first session:

We had an amazing sixth session with as part of the project. The young carers really enjoyed making flags using fabric and Sharpies to represent a memory of an outside space in Stevenage. Thank you to and for facilitating a great session.

June 2026 - second session:

We had a great fifth session with as part of the project. Thank you to and for an exciting session where the young carers got to build models with modelling clay and go outside and draw with chalks on the wall. It was lovely to see their representations of the outside spaces in Stevenage.
