Lady Eleanor Shelley-Rolls |
Celebrating the who proved that being a woman engineer was possible.

In the spirit of INWED 2026 and our theme of Engineering Intelligence, we honour Lady Eleanor Shelley-Rolls, a woman whose strategic mind and passion for technical progress helped lay the foundation for women in British engineering.

🔧 A founding member of the Women’s Engineering Society (WES), Eleanor used her immense social influence and "intelligence of industry" to advocate for women's place in technical fields at a time when the door was firmly shut.

🔧 Beyond her famous surname, she was a dedicated researcher in the field of electricity and aeronautics. She was an early champion of rural electrification, understanding that engineering was the key to modernising the British landscape.

🔧 As the sister of Charles Rolls (co-founder of Rolls-Royce), she possessed a deep, intuitive understanding of mechanical excellence and spent her life ensuring that engineering innovation was supported, funded, and recognised as a vital professional path for women.

Eleanor proved that Engineering Intelligence isn't just about the mechanics of a machine; it’s about the vision to build an industry that welcomes everyone.

We're expanding our network of WES Clusters across the UK and inviting members to express interest in leading regional activity.

Our aim: to create more in-person networking, career development, and employment opportunities for women in engineering where they live and work.

We've already held successful events in Liverpool, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen, with more regions now looking to grow.

We're now working closely with the newly formed Royal Academy of Engineering Regional Enterprise Hubs, opening up fresh opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and local impact.

Why volunteer as a Cluster Lead or Co-Lead?

✔ Shape local events and networking
✔ Gain leadership and community-building experience
✔ Strengthen your professional visibility
✔ Connect with employers, universities, and innovation hubs
✔ Directly support women in engineering near you

Beatrice Shilling |
Celebrating the who proved that being a woman engineer was possible.

As we look toward and the theme of Engineering Intelligence, few figures loom larger than Beatrice "Tilly" Shilling—the aeronautical engineer who saved the Spitfire.

Brilliant Problem Solving: During the Battle of Britain, Spitfire engines would stall during nose dives due to fuel flooding the carburettor. Beatrice applied her Engineering Intelligence to design a simple, elegant solution: a small metal disc with a precise hole that restricted fuel flow, known affectionately as "Miss Shilling's Or***ce."

A Master of Speed: Beatrice wasn't just a theorist; she was a competitive motorcycle racer. She was one of only three women to earn a "Gold Star" for lapping the Brooklands circuit at over 100 mph, using her technical skill to tune her own engines for maximum performance.

A Life of Innovation: Beyond WWII, her intelligence fueled research at the Royal Aircraft Establishment on everything from supersonic flight to braking systems for the Space Shuttle.

Beatrice proved that true Engineering Intelligence is the ability to find a simple, life-saving solution in the heat of a complex crisis.

Tag a woman in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering who is solving the "impossible" problems of today, or save this post to celebrate a legacy of speed and precision.
