The Stalham Broads WI

The Stalham Broads WI The Stalham Broads Women's Institute is a community group for the women of Stalham, Norfolk and the surrounding area.

We aim to provide education, companionship and support to any woman over the age of 18 years through our regular meetings and events. The Stalham Broads Women's Institute (WI) formed in 2021 to provide the women of Stalham, Norfolk and the surrounding area a place to meet, socialise and support each other. Since forming the group has gone from strength to strength not only helping the women of Sta

lham but also supporting our local community. We meet regularly on the 2nd Monday of the month at 10:00am (meetings start at 10:15am) in the Stalham Town Hall. We are also part of the much wider WI as part of both the Norfolk Federation of WIs and the National Federation of WI for England, Wales and the Islands. Our ethos is to ensure that all women of all ages are inspired, educated and supported to be the best they can be, we do not discriminate on any grounds and except any woman over the age of 18 into our membership.

Our walking group visited the near by How Hill today, and were thankful the temperature had dropped to a cool 16 degrees Celsius. Sadly no Swallowtails were spotted but we did see loads of 'happy' Damselflies and Dragonflies as well as a Reed Warbler (which was too shy to have his picture taken).

Back in 2023 The Stalham Broads planted a tiny crab apple sapling to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III by the burial ground in Campingfield Lane. This sapling had spent 12 months sat in a tub in our Secretary's backgarden having arrived initally as just a mere twig (literally it was a single twig with roots) before we were finally able to plant it in it's current location. TWIggy as it was christened has had a couple of scary moments in the last few years (the original sign was destroyed by individuals unknown) but 'she' is still going strong and despite not growing upwards (Crab Apple trees aren't massively tall, we may have got a mini tree by mistake lol) there is plenty of green leaves and fresh shoots on her.

Yesterday evening The Stalham Broads WI once again provided the refreshments for the town of Stalham's Annual Meeting. This event gives us the chance to not only give back to the community it also allows us to promote the WI and raise some funds (this year we received a grant to help in a future community event we are planning later in 2026). Irene Sheehan our President collected the giant cheque for the grant on the WI's behalf.

The Stalham Walking group have been out and about this morning walking along part of the Jan Marks Walk in the Stalham area before returning via Sutton and a well earned rest and refreshments in Stalham. Beautiful and sunny but with a chilly biting wind.

At yesterday's Federation Annual Meeting one of the Creative Arts committee (Sandra) passed me details of some upcoming craft workshops she is running locally. One is a regular Scrapbooking Class in Spixworth the other two are workshops she is holding at Hoveton Village Hall. Sandra is an amazing instructor who regularly provides papercraft actvities through the Federation (I made an Explosion Box with her last year so can assest to her ability as a Tutor). Details of all three are below.

Coming up on 11th June, we've organised a private tour of Carrow House for our members, numbers are limited and will be dealt with on a first come basis. Cost is £20 in advance (it is easier than taking deposits according to someone). There will be a sign up sheet at Monday's meeting so if you aren't able to attend on Monday but want to go please contact the Secretary ASAP. If this one goes well there maybe other future tours depending on interest.

Discover the story of Carrow House and it's Forgotten Vaults, once the grand residence of the legendary Colman family, makers of the city’s famous mustard
