Commutation Factors Reduce Police Pension Lump Sums
New Police Pension commutation factors, effective 22 May 2026, have reduced retirement lump sums by around 5%.
The change has caused concern as many officers had based expectations on earlier forecasts. The Police Federation is reviewing the justification and considering potential legal implications for those previously quoted higher figures.
NPCC examples show a typical lump sum at age 50 falling from about £174,850 to £166,075. Younger and more senior officers are expected to be most affected.
The Home Office states that such actuarial updates are routine and must be implemented immediately.
This follows earlier issues with commutation factors affecting retirements between December 2001 and November 2006, which led to compensation payments after Ombudsman intervention.
A fuller article on this subject will appear in the next edition of The Staffordshire Knot due in late June 2026.
