⚠️ Water Safety Warning ⚠️
Recent reports from France are heartbreaking, with around 40 young people losing their lives in drowning incidents during the recent heatwave.
Many of these tragedies are believed to involve a combination of factors, including:
💦 Thermal shock from jumping into cold water when the body is overheated
🌊 Hidden currents and changing water conditions
🏊 Swimming in unsuitable or unsupervised locations
With so many rivers, canals, lakes and waterways accessible around our area, we want to remind everyone of the importance of staying safe around open water.
Parents and carers – please take a few moments to talk to your children and teenagers about the risks. Even strong swimmers can quickly find themselves in difficulty, especially when entering cold water suddenly or swimming where conditions are unfamiliar.
If you’re spending time outdoors in the warm weather:
✅ Swim only in designated safe areas
✅ Never jump straight into cold water
✅ Avoid swimming alone
✅ Be aware of currents and underwater hazards
✅ Call 999 and ask for the Fire & Rescue Service if someone is in trouble in the water
