Families turned out in steady numbers yesterday, for the library sessions at Rising Brook and Brereton Libraries, with lots of fun and learning had by the children. Everyone enjoyed taking part in the waste challenge sorting game, learning about composting of food waste, making creative pen holders, shell gardens from single-use glass and plastic items and meeting the Tiger composting worms, while learning about composting.

A big thank you to Staffordshire Community Learning for Supporting these lovely events and helping make them a success!

We had a lovely time at Hednesford library during our "No Waste Hero" morning. The children enjoyed making insect-themed pots from recycled bits and bobs.

We also learned how Tiger worms help with composting and discovered how we can create succulent pots by reusing glass dessert dishes.

Everyone took part in "sort the waste" challenge and ended a productive morning with various colouring and completing of wordsearches.

Our next "No Waste Hero" library sessions will be on Thursday 28th May at Rising Brook library in the morning and Brereton library for the afternoon. We look forward to seeing you there!

We would like to share our community involvement over the last few months.

We have grown native wildflower plug plants for local greenspaces. Learners have contributed to planting at Colwich church, making of bird nesting boxes for the villages of Little and Great Haywood as well as nurturing plants for the Sustainablity in Colwich and The Haywoods (SinCH) volunteer group and not forgetting supporting Rugeley's YMCA with a spring tidy of the raised beds!

Most recently we have been busy helping Ingestre Orangery - a local charity, with the start of a fairy garden to be shared by visiting families.

The start of the Gardening and Conservation course. We explored the old cart track, with its ancient oaks and carpets of bluebells, greater stitchworth and wild garlic. Learners were so lucky to see a barn owl emerge from the owl box which was just amazing!

Learners on the Gardening in the Community course have been busy giving the raised beds at the Rugeley YMCA a spring makeover. Dead plants from last year were cleared away, the beds were topped up with homemade compost, and spring planting has begun - as part of our community involvement!

Below are a few pictures of our learners getting involved and plants we have been growing since September 2025.

If you are 19 years and over by 31st August 2025 and live in Staffordshire (excluding Stoke on Trent), why not join one of our free courses? We have several courses available to include Crafting in the Community, and Gardening and Conservation, to name a few.
