The LMS-Patriot Company The LMS-Patriot Company is building 'The Unknown Warrior' - Visit: www.lms-patriot.org.uk These were 'Valour', 'Remembrance' and 'Patriot'.

The LMS-Patriot Project was launched in April 2008, to build a replica LMS Patriot steam locomotive following the scrapping of all 52 originals in the 1960s. This would later be named 'The Unknown Warrior' following a competition held in Steam Railway magazine. Following the Great War, three of the then Railway Companies named locomotives to honour the railway employees who had fought and died dur

ing the conflict. The LNWR memorial engine, a Claughton class locomotive, was named 'Patriot', but the name was later transferred to a new 4-6-0 locomotive number 5500, which became the new memorial engine for the LMS. From this the class subsequently became known as the Patriot class. The new 'Patriot' will be named 'The Unknown Warrior' in keeping with the tradition of war memorial engines. The LMS-Patriot Project aims to continue this tradition in memory of all those brave men and women who courageously served their country. The new locomotive will serve as a permanent memorial to all those who fought and died in the First World War and all subsequent wars.

LMS–Patriot Company Board Recruitment

We continue to seek new individuals to strengthen the Board of Trustees for the Charity.

In the last issue of 'The Warrior' we introduced our new Company Secretary Iain Gould. However, John Hastings-Thomson continues as Chairman only in an acting capacity; and our Engineering team requires further strengthening.

Moreover, Sales Director Roger Bateman has recently informed the Board that he will need to step down later this year. The sales role comprises responsibility for both on line sales from the office and our merchandise stands at various heritage steam railway events. Would you enjoy the excitement of putting on a show stand; the opportunity to talk directly to the public about our locomotive; meeting a wide variety of like-minded people from both inside the industry and out, and achieving sales knowing that you have helped fund the build by your efforts?

Each of the above roles also involve commitment to quarterly board meetings in Stafford plus annual AGM attendance. All out of pocket expenses can be claimed.

If you have (or you know anyone who has) relevant skill sets in organisational leadership, engineering or sales, and would like to get involved, we would very much like to discuss with you how you can help.

Please contact David Tuffin for an informal exploratory discussion.

This week's progress showing more work on 5551.

First of we have work done on the boiler by Heritage Boiler Steam Services Ltd . Completing the copper stays.

While down at Tyseley the cylinders have been cleaned, painted and more reaming has been done. This week saw another significant step forward with the trial-fitting of the Weighshaft, this being part of the Reversing gear. The pictures show the Weighshaft from various positions of the frames.
