For many autistic girls and women, the experience of rejection, or even the possibility of rejection, can feel overwhelming in a way that's hard to explain to others. A change in someone's tone. A message left on read. Feedback that was meant kindly but landed like a blow.
Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) isn't about being "too sensitive." It's connected to real experiences: years of emotional invalidation, the exhaustion of masking, heightened pattern recognition, and differences in how emotions are processed and felt in the body.
Our new blog looks at all of this, what RSD is, how it develops, and what neuroaffirmative support can look like.

If this resonates with you, or with someone you support, we hope it helps to have a name for it, and to know you're not alone.

💜Fibro & Me💜

🔥WHAT IS THE “FORK THEORY”? 🍴🔥

Most people know about the Spoon Theory…

But some chronic illness sufferers also relate to something called:
🍴 The Fork Theory.

It explains what happens when life keeps “stabbing” your nervous system all day long.

💜 SO… WHAT DOES A “FORK” MEAN?

In the Fork Theory, every stress, symptom, pressure, or overwhelm is like being poked with a fork.

One fork alone might be manageable.

But when too many forks happen at once…
the nervous system becomes overwhelmed.

And eventually?

💥 The body crashes
💥 Symptoms flare
💥 Emotions overflow
💥 The brain shuts down
💥 Everything suddenly feels “too much”

💜 THINGS THAT CAN FEEL LIKE “FORKS”

For someone with fibromyalgia, forks may include:
🍴 Pain
🍴 Poor sleep
🍴 Noise
🍴 Bright lights
🍴 Stress
🍴 Crowds
🍴 Temperature changes
🍴 Work pressure
🍴 Emotional overwhelm
🍴 Conflict
🍴 Hormones
🍴 Illness
🍴 Too many demands at once

Even small things can become overwhelming when the nervous system is already overloaded.

💜 IT’S ABOUT NERVOUS SYSTEM OVERLOAD

Fibromyalgia is strongly linked to central sensitisation.

This means the nervous system becomes extra sensitive and reactive.

So while one stressful event may feel manageable for someone else…

for a fibro sufferer, multiple “forks” can quickly pile up until the body simply cannot cope anymore.

💜 PEOPLE OFTEN DON’T SEE THE BUILD-UP

Others may only notice:
💥 The shutdown
💥 The tears
💥 The irritability
💥 The exhaustion
💥 The flare afterward

But they often do NOT see:
💜 The constant pain beforehand
💜 The sensory overload
💜 The emotional pressure
💜 The masking
💜 The mental exhaustion building quietly all day

The final fork is usually NOT the only problem.

It is just the fork that tipped everything over the edge.

💜 THIS IS WHY SMALL THINGS CAN SOMETIMES FEEL HUGE

People may think:
❌ “Why upset over something small?”
❌ “Why are you overwhelmed so easily?”
❌ “Why can’t you just cope?”

But the nervous system may already be carrying:
💥 Pain
💥 Exhaustion
💥 Stress
💥 Sensory overload
💥 Poor sleep
💥 Emotional strain

Sometimes one extra “fork” is simply too much.

💜 WHAT MAY HELP REDUCE FORKS?

Everybody is different, but helpful things may include:
💜 Quiet rest breaks
💜 Reducing sensory overload
💜 Pacing activities
💜 Protecting sleep
💜 Saying no when needed
💜 Asking for help
💜 Calming the nervous system
💜 Gentle routines
💜 Less pressure and guilt

Reducing overload matters.

💜 IMPORTANT REMINDER

If someone with fibromyalgia suddenly seems:
💥 Overwhelmed
💥 Emotional
💥 Exhausted
💥 Irritable
💥 Shut down

it does NOT mean they are weak or dramatic.

Sometimes their nervous system has simply been “stabbed with forks” all day long.

The body and brain can only carry so much overload before they reach a limit.
