A huge THANK YOU to every one who helped at our recent two day event, to all those who attended - we hope you enjoyed yourselves , to all the Trade Boats and Land Stalls, to Anglo Welsh for the loan of the narrow boats for the free rides, to River Canal Rescue and their staff for all their help, to Titanic Brewery for donating all their profits from their sales at the event, to all the Musicians who kept us entertained - the music was fantastic! To all the food & drink Vendors, to our very popular Face Painter, to all SRL Volunteers for the work put in before , during and after the event - helping to clear up and pack away. The tours of the site were a great success!. Thank you to The Finney family for your kind permission and help and to the SRL committee and sub committee for all the organisation and planning. Thank you too to everyone who donated and made items for sale (including the popular locally made wooden Mushrooms, the locally made charcoal and the books written by our very own Irish Author - Jinny Alexander 😉 ). Thanks to the organisations who supported us - Staffs Police, Midlands Air Ambulance, RNLI and Stafford Boat Club. A big thank you to those who advertised the event and help spread the word, thank you to Baswich Community Group for your support. Thanks too go to those who couldn’t make it but decided to make a donation instead. Sorry if I’ve missed anyone off !!
We were thrilled it all went so well 🥳

The Canal Watch House Baswich.

The Stafford Riverway Link are searching for information regarding the Canal Watch House at Baswich. The Watch House was most likely to have been situated next to Stoneford Bridge (no.103) on the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal; this corresponds to plot 246 on the 1836/1845 Tithe Map for Baswich.

The earliest record they found of the Watch House was a baptism in 1821 and the last record was in the 1922 Spring Electoral Register. Between these dates the house was occupied by several families, including that of Joseph Malpas, several generations of the Marshall family, Robert Mayhew and Thomas Jones.

At the moment they do not know what happened to the Watch House after 1922. Was it renamed and, if so, who may have lived there? When was it demolished?

Any information will be very much appreciated.

David.
