Duncan Wardle, Disney's former Head of Innovation & Creativity, explains why the real insight for innovation doesn't show up until the fifth or sixth "why."

In the smart home industry, it can be easy to assume clients would want the newest gear, the latest gadget, the flashiest system, but sometimes the real reason a client wants whole-home audio, or a lighting scene, or a smart security system has nothing to do with the technology itself. It's about memory, comfort, connection, and the life they're trying to create at home. The integrators who ask "why" a few extra times are the ones who design systems clients actually fall in love with, not just systems that check a spec sheet.

The “Beside the Seaside” home cinema, delivered by Cinemaworks, transformed an unusual extension of a Victorian home on England’s south coast into a fully engineered private theater. The project balances traditional cinema styling with modern performance, featuring a 16-channel surround system, a Sony laser projector, and carefully engineered speaker placement to deliver immersive sound across two seating rows.

Working closely with the homeowners and builder, Cinemaworks also designed the room’s lighting and interior aesthetic, collaborating with Fraser Besant of Bristol to create layered lighting scenes that enhance the cinematic atmosphere.

The result? A high-performance theater that feels both timeless and personal, earning Best Home Cinema Level I at the 2025 EMEA CEDIA Smart Home Awards.

The Superyacht Vertigo AV Refit, delivered by Liquid Automation, brought a fully integrated Crestron-powered control and entertainment platform to one of the world’s most sophisticated marine environments. Working closely with shipyard project managers, crew, engineers, and specialist trades during a major refit, the team rebuilt the yacht’s AV, control, and networking systems from the ground up.

The system now distributes audio and video to 20 zones across the vessel, integrates lighting, navigation data, CCTV, and communications, and even allows instant switching between private owner mode and charter mode to tailor the onboard experience for different guests. Designed, pre-built, and tested in New Zealand before installation overseas, the project demonstrates the scale, coordination, and technical precision required when integration extends far beyond the home.

The result? Winner of Technology Beyond the Home at the 2025 Asia Pacific CEDIA Smart Home Awards.

The Brentwood project, delivered by Global Wave Integration, took home Best Single Room Solution at the 2025 CEDIA Smart Home Awards. The team transformed a single media room into a fully immersive environment, combining a DCI-grade video wall, spatial audio, and human-centric lighting to support everything from movie nights to working from home.
