‘Choose local’ rallying call to residents and visitors in St Andrews

09/06/2026

We,in St Andrews in Bloom, can not commend the Clean and Green team highly enough. Without them the hanging baskets would not be in place every summer, the planters would not be topped up with new compost and the liners would not be removed from the bus station and the harbour and replaced.
As Bid St Andrews have said in their post on this, we,the residents of St Andrews, have so much else to thank them for. The quiet removal of graffiti and stickers stuck to lamp standards, the cleaning up of litter often done early morning when no one is around, the cleaning up of plants which have been pulled from our tubs and notifying us of this so we know it has happened.
Many people do not realise the important job Dave and his team do but, believe me,without their contribution the town would look a lot worse.
We,in Bloom, could not continue as we do without them.

BELL STREET ROAD CLOSURE

Following discussions with the contractor responsible for the works on Bell Street from 25 May to 14 June, we are pleased to confirm that the road closure is expected to be lifted significantly earlier than planned.

The excavation has now been backfilled and is due to be reinstated tomorrow. While some footpath slabbing works remain, the contractor has advised us that, subject to the tarmac cooling sufficiently, barriers will be pulled back to allow one lane of traffic to reopen through Bell Street. In addition, a road sweeper has been arranged for Monday to clean the area before the site is fully cleared.

BID St Andrews would like to thank the contractor for taking the concerns of local businesses into account and for working with us to minimise disruption wherever possible.

Over the past five years, BID St Andrews has delivered major events, marketing initiatives and business support projects that have helped keep St Andrews competitive.

But the largest project supported by BID St Andrews is the Clean & Green Team.

Delivered by St Andrews Environmental Network and funded directly through the BID levy, the Clean & Green Team is one of the most visible examples of BID investment in action. Working in all weathers, five days a week, they tackle everything from litter picking, graffiti removal, street cleaning, support for St Andrews in Bloom and countless behind-the-scenes tasks that help care for the town's streets and public spaces.

This service goes beyond what is provided through statutory services, delivering an enhanced level of care and maintenance for St Andrews town centre. There is currently no alternative funding in place to maintain the Clean & Green Team at its current level.

What this video cannot fully capture is the scale of their contribution. Much of what they do happens quietly behind the scenes, but without them, the impact would be felt almost immediately.

As the BID renewal ballot approaches, we hope this video offers a glimpse into the dedication, hard work and pride behind one of the most important services funded by our local businesses.

Just a quick update for businesses: over the past week, the Clean & Green Team have seen a significant influx of graffiti across the town centre, particularly in key public areas and on street infrastructure.

The team have removed over 100 pieces of graffiti so far, including paint pen, permanent marker and chalk graffiti, and have also been liaising closely with Fife Council’s street cleaning team to help tackle the issue as quickly as possible.

If your premises have been affected by chalk graffiti, this can often be removed easily with a little water and a brush, so please do give this a try if you are looking to clear it quickly.

A huge thank you to the team for all of their hard work responding to this over the past few days alongside their other duties, it is very much appreciated.

The Clean & Green Team are out early every week tackling the impact of busy weekends, and have recently extended the service to start 30 minutes earlier, so key areas are cleaner, sooner.

This enhanced service builds on what the Council provides, and is made possible through the continued support of our BID businesses. Our thanks also go to Dave, Rory and Paul for their hard work and commitment on the ground each week.
