St Andrews Third Culture Society

St Andrews Third Culture Society Do you struggle to answer the questions "so where's home?" or "where are you from?"

If so, you are Po***ck & Ruth E.

Our society aims to serve as a platform to bring together Third Culture Kids and people interested in transnationalism. A Third Culture Kid is a person who has lived for a significant amount of time outside of their parents’ culture, belonging to a culture that is neither theirs or their parents', but a third one. "A Third Culture Kid (TCK) is a person who has spent a significant part of his or he

r developmental years outside the parents' culture. The TCK builds relationships to all of the cultures, while not having full ownership of any. Although elements from each culture are assimilated into the TCK's life experience, the sense of belonging is in relationship to others of similar background"

- Third Culture Kids by David C. Van Reken

Being a Third Culture Kid can be difficult to embrace, especially when being thrown into university life where most people do not have Third Culture backgrounds. Our society hopes to unite Third Culture Kids, allowing students to feel more at home and to share their experiences. We hope that this will help students overcome the challenges and embrace the positives of being a Third Culture Kid at university. Our society is planning to organise various social events throughout the year, such as pub crawls, cultural themed events and inter-university socials with other TCK societies. Any suggestions for other events are welcomed!
