St Andrews Union Debating Society

St Andrews Union Debating Society The oldest - and some might say finest - debating society of its kind. Established 1794 in St Andrews. We also run competetive debating.

The society organises both public and competitive debating at St Andrews. Every Thursday, usually at 19:30, we host public debates in Lower Parliament Hall, a former meeting place of the Parliament of Scotland. For our public debates we invite renound experts to disuss their specialist topics. Recent speakers include Sir Menzies Campbell, Lord Owen and Richard Dawkins. Including competing at the W

orld and European University Debating Championships. Additionally, the society hosts socials after our public debates on Thursday and on some weekends. While at our public debates port and soft drinks are avaliable for free throughout. With the best floor speech winning a bottle of port or alternative of their choice! All are welcome to enjoy the excitement, community and oppertunity of debating at St Andrews.

Here are our week 9 events! We'll have Novice Training in the Large Rehearsal Room on the top floor of the Union from 2 PM to 5 PM on Wednesday. Join us on Thursday in Lower Parliament Hall our AGM! Any matriculated student is eligable to run and vote! You MUST have your student ID to enter. As we have alot to get through we will have a 7:15 PM start time. The doors will SHUT at 7:15, so please ensure that you arrive early! After the AGM, join us at Main Bar to celebrate the new board!

Here's a recap of the past couple of weeks in the UDS! We had a successful week of competitions during spring vacation, with Susan and Abbie winning at Warwick Open and Zac chairing the final. William made it to the quarter finals of the LSE Open. This week's collab debate with BUTE was a great success. If you missed it, it is available to watch on our youtube!
