Spilsby's Sessions House Project

Spilsby's Sessions House Project The Sessions House CIC is an officially registered 'Not for Profit' Community Interest Company, seeking positive outcomes for heritage, culture and community.

A combined arts, heritage and community project that aims to completely regenerate Spilsby's Sessions House (Spilsby Theatre), a grade II listed former courthouse and police station. The Sessions House project has the long term aim of regenerating a Grade II listed former courthouse and police station in the rural town of Spilsby, Lincolnshire. The building has been used as Spilsby Theatre since 1

984 and is now on the national 'Theatre Buildings at Risk Register.'

The project will reinvigorate the community asset, preserving a piece of national heritage by reviving the theatre, creating a flexible performing arts venue in the historic building. We are working with national funding organisations and seeking public support to help finance the regeneration project. For more details please visit www.thesessionshouse.org.uk

News Release 🗞️

The Heritage at Risk works funded by Historic England have been completed at Spilsby Sessions House.

Spilsby Sessions House was first allocated £1.006 million in August 2025 as part of the Heritage at Risk Capital Fund programme which allowed repairs to the roofs, conservation to the windows and some high-level brick works.

Historic England granted an additional £28,500 to the project in March 2026. This funding was for the removal of existing auditorium ceiling under the main roof, whilst retaining and storing some of the decorative features, to be reinstalled when the new ceiling is built. The ceiling work was approved by East Lindsey District Council at planning committee in early February this year.

Historic England's Heritage at Risk Capital Fund programme supports the conservation and regeneration of at-risk heritage assets across the country, and restoring local heritage to ensure it can be enjoyed for many generations to come.

The grant was awarded in addition to the £4.929 million of UK Government funding already secured to ensure the further transformation of this important cultural asset, though a partnership between East Lindsey District Council and Spilsby Sessions House Charity.

🗞️news release 📢

Conservation works to repair and restore the roof and brickwork at Spilsby Sessions House have reached a significant milestone.

The works to the Grade II listed theatre are part of a £1.006m Heritage at Risk grant awarded by Historic England following a successful funding bid from East Lindsey District Council last year.

This funding has been used to allow major conservation works to the roof and brickwork throughout the building as well as repairing and replacing windows.

Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Capital Fund programme supports the conservation and regeneration of at-risk heritage assets across the country, and restoring local heritage to ensure it can be enjoyed for many generations to come.

The grant was awarded in addition to the £4.929 million of UK Government funding already secured to ensure the further transformation of this important cultural asset, though a partnership between East Lindsey District Council and Spilsby Sessions House Charity.

The Government funding will allow the building to reopen for cultural and art uses, as well as to have a wider daytime use as a community space.

Cllr Graham Marsh, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, Leisure and Culture and Carbon Reduction at East Lindsey District Council said: “Historic England’s additional funding has been instrumental in enabling significant conservation work to begin, safeguarding this important building from further deterioration during the winter months. Without this support, the risks to the structure would have continued to grow.

“This ambitious project represents far more than essential repairs. By restoring it with care and attention, we are preserving the historic character of this culturally significant asset for residents of Spilsby and the wider district.”

Lou Brenan, Director of Regions, Historic England, said: “Spilsby Sessions House is a building of exceptional historic significance, and it is encouraging to see conservation works progressing so well. By investing in urgent repairs through our Heritage at Risk Capital Fund, we are helping to secure its future and support its transformation into a place that can once again be enjoyed by the local community and visitors alike.”

Bruce Knight, Spilsby Sessions House Trustee, said: “We are very grateful to Historic England who supported Spilsby Sessions House in early stages of the project and who have continued their support with this Heritage at Risk funding, providing essential preservation work and significantly contributing towards bringing the community’s historic building back into use as cultural venue.”

SPILSBY LIGHT NIGHT TO TAKE A BREAK IN 2026 AS SESSIONS ARTS PLAN FUTURE PROGRAMME

At Sessions Arts, we want to share that Spilsby Light Night will be taking a break this year.

This decision has been made because it was not possible to have the necessary funding in place to enable the delivery of the event on this occasion. While this is disappointing, we want to reassure our audiences, artists and partners that this pause is part of a wider and positive plan for the future of arts activity in Spilsby.

Our current focus is on the opening of Spilsby Sessions House as a major new arts and cultural venue, scheduled to open in 2027. As part of this exciting next chapter, we are aiming to incorporate elements of Spilsby Light Night into a launch event for the new venue, bringing back familiar creative highlights in a new and expanded way.

Alongside this, we are actively working to secure funding to enable a programme of local outdoor arts events in 2026, with activity planned to begin in late spring/early summer. This programme will continue our commitment to delivering accessible, high-quality arts experiences for the local community.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Spilsby Light Night over the years, we can’t wait to share what’s next and rest assured we will be back! ✨
