Ever wondered whether surf therapy makes a difference or why we do what we do each week?

Well, this beautiful feedback from the parent of one of our amazing young surfers is the answer. And it’s also why, having just finished our first two surf therapy courses of the year, we can’t wait to get back in the water in a couple of weeks for courses 3 and 4!

If you would like to help make a real difference like that to the lives of young people and their families, we would love to have you as a volunteer. No surfing skills required, just a love of the ocean and having fun.

Alternatively, why not make a donation?

You can do both at waveproject.co.uk

πŸ„ Double your donation, double the smiles πŸ„β€β™€οΈ

This marks a very important date in The Wave Project calendar.

Mental Health Awareness Week brings into focus the importance of talking about our well-being and mental health.

This year’s theme of anxiety highlights one of the most common mental health problems we can experience. And as we support young people with mental health issues through surf therapy programmes, we know the importance of looking after our mental health.

But we can’t do this alone.

Which is why we are taking part in the Kind2Mind campaign, a match-funding initiative where any donation you make during Mental Health Awareness Week will be DOUBLED!

We hope you have been enjoying your Coronation β€œBig Help Out” bank holiday. Maybe you are one of the thousands choosing to spend part of your day volunteering? Maybe it is your very first time volunteering at something? Well done and hopefully you have discovered what an amazing experience it can be and it has got you thinking about how you can do more.

Well, how about giving volunteering with the Wave Project a go? We can always use an extra pair of hands at our surf therapy and surf club sessions . You don’t need to be a surfer, just someone who loves the water and knows how to have fun! And if the water isn’t your thing, there are lots of ways you can help us on land too.

We can promise you an amazing, rewarding experience where you will meet an awesome group of like-minded folk and help change the lives of some incredible young people.

You can find out more at waveproject.co.uk, and that’s also the place to go to register your interest.

Mahalo! πŸ€™πŸ„πŸ½β€β™€οΈπŸ„πŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ’™

We know King Charles is a bit busy today but if he wants to join us for our surf therapy sessions on Sunday, he would be very welcome! 🀣

We can’t believe we are at week FOUR of our first two surf therapy courses of the year already! We will be in action all day on Sunday, at Southwick beach next to Carats cafe. If you are down that way getting some post-Coronation fresh air, why not come and have a look and maybe say hello?

We are always looking out for new volunteers. No surfing experience is required, just a love of the ocean and having fun in it. To find out more and register an interest, please go to waveproject.co.uk . That’s also the place to go if you want to make a donation.

Whatever you are doing, have a great Coronation weekend! πŸ‘‘πŸ€™πŸ„πŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ„πŸ½β€β™€οΈπŸ’™

It’s exciting times!

Our first two surf therapy courses of the year start on Sunday. So this felt like the perfect time to introduce our new Project Coordinator, the wonderful Kate! We asked her a few questions:

1. What attracted you to The Wave Project?

First and foremost I’m really interested in supporting young people - I know from experience that so many are struggling with mental health issues, isolation and anxiety. Secondly I live very close to Southwick beach where we deliver our Surf Therapy sessions, so the role seemed like an amazing opportunity to work in and with my community. And lastly I love the sea. It was a no brainer!

2. What does the ocean mean to you?

I have always loved wild swimming, in ponds, lakes, rivers and the sea. I find being in the water a stress release, a mood booster and an amazing way to connect with nature. I’m a little out of my comfort zone when it comes to surfing but I’m really excited to learn all I can about Surf Therapy and the immense benefits it brings.

3. What are you most excited about for the Brighton & Sussex Wave Project in 2023?

Getting to know the young people who come to our Surf Therapy and Surf Club sessions, spending more time with our incredible volunteer team, working outside on our lovely beach and having LOADS of fun in the sea!

We are so pleased to have Kate join us. And if you are around Southwick beach on Sunday, why not pop down to see us and maybe say hello! πŸ€™πŸ„πŸ½β€β™€οΈπŸ„πŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ’™

It’s a sad day for surf therapy around the world as news reaches us that we have lost one of the greats. Surf dog Ricochet passed over the rainbow bridge yesterday after a long illness and at the age of 15.

Surf Dog Ricochet was one of the first surf therapy dogs, changing hundreds of peoples lives and raising millions of dollars for charity, as well inspiring other surf therapy dogs globally, including the South coast’s own Scooter Surf Therapy Dog, with whom we have had the pleasure to work!

Much love and positive energy to Ricochet’s family, especially Judy and Cori.

You can rest now Ricochet, your work is done. πŸ•πŸ„πŸ½β€β™€οΈπŸ„πŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ’™πŸ€™
