The MSPTA has fundraised for a new climbing boulder wall, which aims to tackle the increasing number of pupils not attending school. Climbing walls have been proven to boost concentration and problem-solving abilities and improve physical and mental well-being. Unveiled today, the project has been possible, thanks to funding support from Newark and Sherwood District Council, supported by Cllr Roger Jackson, and the Southwell & District Lions Club CIO. The project was spearheaded by the school’s inclusion lead, Mr Dale Kinnison.
One of the positive aspects of climbing is that it is an individual sport, where participants can focus on themselves, but that takes place in a group setting, therefore building a sense of team spirit. The project follows inspiration from the Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust which improved its service users’ wellbeing through climbing.
Post Covid, the national picture is that school pupil absenteeism has soared, largely due to mental heath and high anxiety levels. Not all pupils excel at academic studies, but The Minster School is continually looking at projects to spark pupils’ interests, where they can make new friends and give them something to look forward to.
A school that successfully improved their pupil attendance, which it attributes to the installation of a climbing wall, is Garnteg Primary School, in Pontypool, where persistent absenteeism was reduced by 5% year on year. In a school as large as The Minster School, the largest in Newark and Sherwood, this could equate to improving the chances of roughly 20 pupils every year. As well as providing a new physical pursuit for 1700 pupils and helping build concentration.
