Southwell & District Lions Club CIO

Southwell & District Lions Club CIO Southwell & District Lions is a friendly, vibrant club raising funds for good causes. New members always welcome, visit our website. Our motto is “We Serve”.

We have a full calender of charitable and social activities, and help others to organise and run events to raise funds. Southwell & District Lions Club is part of UK District 105CE covering the East Midlands and counties southwards to Essex. We are part of Lions International, the largest world-wide volunteer organisation providing community and humanitarian service. We believe that one person can

make a difference and together we can change the world. NEW MEMBERS

Our club currently has approx. 30 active members and we are always interested in talking to people who wish to join us. Membership is by invitation only. If you know someone who is currently a Lion, then please ask them for more information. If you do not know one, then please phone our Membership Officer, Simon Dawkins on 07932 067591 or via email on [email protected]

Normally, prospective members attend several Lions meetings (see Club Info page) to get a feel for the workings of the club and for some of the things that we do as well as get to know some of our members. There are also opportunities to get involved in some of our functions. Whilst the Lions motto is 'We Serve', our club intends to have fun whilst doing so. Staid, formal meetings are not our style - although we do adhere to an agenda. The commitment that we ask of our members is mostly in terms of time, as apart from the twice-a-month meetings, we run functions to help raise money and these are normally in the evenings or at weekends. The Lions were very pleased to be out and about to give a hand at two community events this weekend. On Saturday morning, we helped to set up at Farnsfield St Michael's Primary School, which is celebrating its 29th anniversary this year.

Then, today, we were at Southwell Running Club's Summer Scamper, stewarding and handing out medals, which we sponsored, at the finishing line. 350 runners did a great job running 10k over a tough course to raise funds for Reach Learning Disability. Well done, everyone!

If you are part of, or support, a community group, local charity, school, sports club, youth group or similar and could do with some additional funds or help at one of your events, please get in touch via our website or by emailing us at [email protected].

A small group of Southwell Lions visited Rainbows Hospice in Loughborough last week to meet with their music therapist and learn about the tremendous benefit that music has for babies, children and young people with life limiting conditions - and their families. We have made a donation to pay for up to ten music therapy sessions.

We were made extremely welcome at the hospice, when we were shown round the facilities and saw for ourselves the amazing work that everyone at Rainbows does for these families and their loved ones with life limiting conditions. We are delighted to be able to help with their fund raising and look forward to working with them more in the future.

If you work with a local charity, school, sports club, youth group, community support group or a similar good cause and need some help in funding your needs, then please contact us at [email protected] or via our website.

Dawn House School is a specialist school in Rainworth that supports children and young people with speech, language and communication needs, so Southwell Lions were delighted to answer the call for funding to pay for Makatan-based music sessions by Singing Hands, a group that helps to develop language and communication through music, songs, games & stories.

If you are part of, or support, a school, voluntary group, sports club, youth group or local charity and would benefit from some extra funding, then contact us via our website or at [email protected] and tell us what you need the money for.

We were made very welcome at Farnsfield Cricket Club the other day when they unveiled their new scoreboard controller following our donation for its purchase. Good luck to the club in its cricketing endeavours this season!

We are delighted to support Rumbles Community Cafe at Sconce & Devon Park in Newark with a donation that will enable it to replace the main service counter in the café and improve and increase its outdoor seating.

Rumbles is a non profit charitable organisation that supports disabled and disadvantaged young people across Nottinghamshire. As well as being a great place to stop for a bite to eat and a drink, Rumbles offers a catering and a life skills training programme that helps students and beneficiaries make the leap from education to employment or voluntary service and independent living.

If you are part of, or support, a good cause in our area, like Rumbles Community Cafe, and are in need of funding for improvements or to expand what you do, then why not contact Southwell Lions via our website or email us at [email protected]?

A huge thank you to everyone who came out on a cold and wet night to support our annual quiz last night , which had been postponed due to torrential rain in November. The 26 teams had their knowledge tested on subjects from films and royalty (loosely) to music, food & drink, classic advertising campaigns and current affairs. The evening raised over £2,000, which will be donated to good causes in our community.

The winning team was 'Six must have beers', with an impressive 88 points out of a possible 100.

Thanks also go to quizmaster Graham Coulson and his assistants Ian Gillings, with his fiendish 'Connections' round, and Ian Edwards, who seems to read different newspapers from the rest of us! As always, we are grateful to Nick Turner for providing the bar.

Now we need to disburse those funds! If you are part of, or support, a local community group, sports club, school, charity, health support group or a similar good cause, and are in need of finding, please contact us at [email protected] or via our website.
