Southwell u3a’s A Capella group is celebrating it’s first birthday this month. They recently welcomed around 20 enthusiastic singers to an A Ca****la Taster Workshop to introduce a whole new audience to the joy and energy of unaccompanied harmony. Together they learned a lively new shanty (Roll the Old Chariot Along), revisited a 1950s Everly Brothers classic (Bye Bye Love), and enjoyed a breathtaking recording of Loch Lomond performed by the combined voices of Voces8 and Ringmasters. If you haven’t heard it yet, do look it up on YouTube — it’s truly stunning.

At their regular session in May, they made excellent progress with their very first madrigal and also welcomed back several of the workshop participants.

New members are always welcome, so if you’d like to try this vibrant, uplifting style of music, go to www.southwell.u3asite.uk to see how to join them. You’ll be greeted with a warm smile and plenty of harmony

Southwell u3a’s Come Dine With Us is a social cooking group who meet monthly to cook a meal together; either in person at a group members house or over Zoom, cooking simultaneously in their own homes.
They are currently cooking national dishes which have been randomly allocated to each member; this month it was the Australian dish Chicken Parmi, the recipe is below so you can try it too.

Ingredients

For the chicken:
* 2 chicken breasts, pounded to about 1cm thickness
* ½ cup (75g) plain flour
* 2 eggs, beaten
* 1 ½ (90g) cups panko breadcrumbs
* ½ tsp dried oregano
* black cracked pepper
* ½ cup (100ml) olive oil, for frying

For the sauce:
* 1 tbsp olive oil
* 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
* 1 can (14oz - 400g) chopped tomatoes
* ½ tsp dried oregano
* Salt & pepper, to taste
For the topping:
* 4 slices shaved ham
* ½ cup (60g) grated mozzarella
* ½ cup (60g) grated cheddar

Method
1. In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat olive oil, then sauté garlic and oregano for 30 seconds. Add chopped tomatoes, salt & pepper, and simmer for 10 minutes until thickened. Set aside.
2. Mix the oregano and cracked black pepper with the flour on one plate, beaten egg on another, and panko breadcrumbs on a third. Dredge each flattened chicken breast in flour, egg, then breadcrumb, pressing firmly to coat both sides.
3. Heat olive oil in a large frying pan over low to medium heat. Fry chicken for 3-4 mins per side until golden and crisp and cooked through. Transfer to a baking tray.
4. Top with the ham, spoon Napoli sauce over each schnitzel, then cover with the grated cheddar and mozzarella.
5. Place under a hot grill (broiler) for 3-5 minutes until bubbly and slightly golden.

Serve hot with chips/fries/wedges and a well-dressed mixed salad. ENJOY!

Southwell u3a would like to share with you a beautiful poem, written by one of the talented members of our creative writing group.

Dandelion Clocks

Perched on their stalks
Haphazardly
Scattered across
The field

We taught our children
How to blow time
Fluff sailed through the meadow
Tiny particles launched
from their fragile anchorage

We counted away
Hour after hour
Heedless of the
Extravagance

Remembering when
We were urged
“To make time”
“To use time wisely “
And “time will run out”

We ran out of dandelion clocks
While around us
Spiralling seeds
Dropped to the ground
Or catching a breeze
Floated dreamily
Somewhere

And time stood still
And held our silence

At their recent monthly meeting Southwell u3a’s members were treated to a talk about the Beatles by performance artist Paul Lillie. Not only did he talk about the Beatles and sing some of their songs he was painting a massive portrait of the band members whilst doing so! Who said men can’t multitask!
At the end of his performance the painting was auctioned off and the proceeds donated to Southwell u3a, you will see on one of the images Jean Matthews, the lucky lady who won the auction, pictured along with Paul. If you would like to see more of Paul’s work head to his website www.paullillie.net

Southwell u3a’s photography group were given a different challenge this month. Their brief was to take three images of vegetables, firstly in their raw state, then prepped ready for cooking and finally as a finished dish. I think you’ll see they not only rose to the photography challenge but their cooking doesn’t look too shabby either!

If you are no longer working full time and like the idea of joining a group like this or any of our other interest groups go to www.southwell.u3asite.uk and have a look what we offer.
