The UK Government is proposing major changes to how assistive software is funded through the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA), which could drastically reduce the support available to disabled students.

What are we doing? ➡️ To ensure disabled students’ voices are heard, we’re gathering feedback from the Snowdon Trust community to put together an evidence-based response to the government consultation.

How can you help? ➡️ You may receive an email from us asking you to fill out a survey to share your experiences of assistive software. If you haven’t yet received an email but would like to get involved, send us a message so we can share the survey with you.

We're celebrating Autism Acceptance Month by showcasing the work of Connor, a Snowdon Master's Scholar alumni who is now using his lived experience of autism to inform his PhD research.

After graduating with a Distinction in MSc Applied Clinical Psychology, supported by the Snowdon Trust, Connor is now in the first year of his SWDTP ESRC-funded PhD with the University of Bath’s Department of Psychology, Centre for Applied Autism Research.

With autistic individuals being more vulnerable to sexual abuse (SA) and r**e and serious sexual offences (RaSSO) than non-autistic individuals, Connor aims to identify the risk factors which predict this and understand the experience of autistic victim-survivors of SA and RaSSO through a multi-perspective exploration (by interviewing autistic victim-survivors of SA and RaSSO, their parents/supporters, and criminal justice system professionals). Finally, Connor will produce materials for the criminal justice system, which intend to improve outcomes for autistic victim-survivors.

Connor is currently working on the scoping review and data collection for his study 1. His PhD is “going incredibly well”, with thanks to his fantastic supervisory team: Professor Katie Maras, Dr Tina Skinner, and Professor Catherine Hamilton-Giachritsis.

“I am loving it, as it allows me to pursue my favourite interest (autism research) and contribute to the literature. The topic is very close to me as well, since I am an autistic victim-survivor of SA myself.”

Connor embodies disability leadership, driving research forward through expertise rooted in lived experience. We're proud to have supported his journey.

Meet Isobel, a Snowdon Master’s Scholar studying an MA in Music Direction at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts 🎼

Through her studies, Isobel is developing practical and technical skills in Music Direction and was recently the Assistant Musical Director (MD) for a second-year production of Mary Poppins. This included accompanying rehearsals, coaching singers, working with the creative team, programming the keyboard sounds, and playing piano for the final performances.

Isobel is now developing her creative project on accessible practice as an MD, exploring how approaches to Music Direction could be improved by a focus on inclusion of disabled artists. She hopes to interview musical directors, performers, and theatre companies about their philosophies and approaches to rehearsal and performance in musical theatre, particularly in relation to their experience working on productions that explored neuro- and/or physical diversity.

The Snowdon Master’s Scholarship programme supports students across a wide range of disciplines to become the next generation of disabled leaders. You can read about all the incredible 2025-26 Snowdon Scholars here: https://www.snowdontrust.org/meet-our-2025-snowdon-masters-scholars/

Meet Louis, a composer and Snowdon Master’s Scholar studying an MA in Composition for Film and Television at the University of Bristol.

Louis’s studies so far have included writing for orchestra and improving his technical skills using composition software. Attending film festivals, gaining work experience at University of Bristol’s recording studios, and freelancing on short films have all given Louis valuable experience towards his professional goals.

A student short film which Louis scored was screened at the In-Film Society Premiere, and he’s rehearsing with the National Open Youth Orchestra for a performance at the Bristol Beacon in the summer.

In the future, Louis aims to create an accessible music studio for composition and teaching, and aspires to become the first disabled composer to win 'Best Film Score' at the BAFTAs.

If you’re an exceptional disabled master’s applicant, don’t forget to submit your Snowdon Master’s Scholarship application by tomorrow 19 March at 11.55pm: https://www.snowdontrust.org/financial-awards/scholarships/

Meet Olivia, a DFN Snowdon Master’s Scholar studying Education (Knowledge, Power and Politics) at the University of Cambridge. She is an advocate for young people aiming to influence policy specifically at the intersection of lived experience, children's rights, disability inclusion and family court proceedings.

During her studies so far, Olivia has produced a dialogue exploring the ‘Everyday Business’ report published by the Domestic Abuse Commissioner’s office in October 2025, and had lectures on official knowledge, governing, policy and justice. Her thesis will be on the voice and agency of young adults that have experienced childhood private family law proceedings.

As a member of the Family Justice Young People’s Board (FJYPB), Olivia takes part in policy discussions, conferences and speaking engagements, sharing young people’s views and making sure they are central to decision making. Recently, Olivia spoke for her fourth time at the Family Justice Council annual conference, this time speaking on technology and AI in the family justice system and its impact on children and young people. She was also awarded an Influence in Action award by the FJYPB for her commitment to improving domestic abuse practice for children.

In her spare time, Olivia is also the Secretary for the Sign Language Society, helping organise classes, handling the communication and supporting at events.

Meet Joe, a freelance dancer, choreographer and Snowdon Master’s Scholar, studying Choreography at Central School of Ballet 🩰

Joe’s professional credits include:
- working with The Royal Ballet as a dancer and choreographer
- leading a choreographic Research and Development project in collaboration with Scottish Ballet
- performing as a Guest Artist with Northern Ballet
- working as a Resident Guest Artist at New Works Ballet Theatre, now choreographing a one act ballet, Sylvia, for the company’s summer tour

Early last year, he founded Productions , a project-based dance collective focusing on developing high quality accessible dance work. Joe’s passion for choreography has partly come from his own challenges of accessing the ballet and dance industry as a disabled dancer.
“My hope was that if there weren’t any opportunities for me to perform lead roles in pieces of classical ballet, then I would create them. But this mission has gone so far past just providing opportunities for me, but also providing opportunities for diverse freelancers to come and work with JPM Productions on new exciting projects.”

Joe aims to develop his choreographic practice further at the Central School of Ballet, so far working on in-person choreographic workshops and exploring different approaches to choreography, and in April will be creating a short work with first year students. He hopes to one day create a full three-act ballet.

Excitingly, JPM Productions will have its first live performance premiere in Hereford in 2027, with a mix of new work that will hopefully also go towards Joe’s final course module.

“I feel that the support from the Snowdon Trust has given me newfound confidence and belief that I can achieve things… and most of all I want to show that disability is not something that stops you from achieving your dreams.”

If you’re an exceptional disabled master’s applicant, don’t forget to submit your Snowdon Master’s Scholarship application by this Thursday 19 March at 11.55pm: https://www.snowdontrust.org/financial-awards/scholarships/

Her studies so far have included theoretical approaches to sustainable changes in society, such as through public transport and housing, which Emma has approached from a disability perspective.

Alongside her studies, Emma has participated in several events and speaking engagements, including:
- facilitating a panel on climate and conservation and a conversation with climate activist Tori Tsui on mental health, disability and creative approaches to climate action at EarthSonic Live at Manchester Museum
- co-leading workshops on Neurodivergence and Environmental Funding for the Environmental Funders Network Conference
- delivering the closing speech at the Dorset Climate COP event

As a trustee for Students Organising for Sustainability, Emma also supports a group of neurodivergent students interested in pursuing careers in the climate sector.
