Here’s married mother of six, Hadija.

Her husband’s income is very low and unstable. She needed to do something as three of her children could not go to school in Uganda.

She had a sewing machine, but it required repairing and she needed some kit.

So, with our partners Canaan Children's Development Initiative -Cacdi, we provided a little help.

“Now, the sewing machine is working. I can work at home, take care of my family, and I managed to enrol the children in school," a relieved Hadija says.

Small grants. Big impact. That’s what we do.

Next week, Vane Tempest Theatre Group will be telling the harrowing story of the 1880 Seaham Colliery disaster. The play recounts the night when 164 men and boys died following an underground explosion. It's a must if you're connected to coalmining or have an interest in County Durham history.
Former miner, Steve English, who wrote the play, explains how he went about conveying a dark chapter in Seaham's history.

The Bitter Taste of Coal runs from Tuesday 18 November to Friday 21 November at Seaham Town Hall.
