Ranger Bree recently spotted and photographed this rare northern dune tiger beetle basking in the dunes.

Theyโ€™re one of the fastest running beetles in the world. Due to how quickly they can dart off it can be tricky to get a photo, so a real treat to have this one.

๐ŸชณThe is one of the last few places they can be still found in the UK.

๐ŸชณTheir presence is a sign of a healthy dune system, with patches of bare, moving sand.

๐ŸชณThey have long legs, which help them run quickly but they can also fly.

๐ŸชณAfter a fast sprint they have to pause and โ€œrefocusโ€ their vision.

๐ŸชณThey love to sunbathe on warm sand to build up energy to hunt.

๐ŸชณFierce little predators, hunting other insects in open sand.

๐ŸชณCan dig holes up to 20cm deep into the face of the dunes to hide on cooler nights.

๐ŸชณThey also lay larvae in these burrows, protecting them over winter before they emerge in summer.

During a recent sand lizard survey, we were delighted to spot four females basking in the sun. The latest surveys have mainly seen males with their bright green side flashes logged, so it was great to see some of the females out and about too.

Even better, theyโ€™d chosen warm patches of bare sand that we could see had been created by the gentle work of cattle hooves from the herd of English longhorn cattle, which grazed the dunes at Formby over the winter.

Itโ€™s great to see how this conservation grazing is already making a difference, helping to create healthier, more suitable habitats where rare wildlife can thrive.
