🦌If you're exploring one of the quieter corners of Formby, you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a roe deer trotting through the landscape.

These graceful animals are one of the UK's most common deer species and can often be recognised by the distinctive white patch on their rump.

Roe deer are naturally shy and tend to keep away from busy areas, so sightings are always a special moment.

They're most active at dawn and dusk, when they emerge to browse on leaves, shoots, grasses and wildflowers.

Despite their delicate appearance, roe deer are impressive jumpers and can leap over obstacles more than a metre high with ease.

If you're lucky enough to spot a roe deer during your visit, please admire it from a distance so as not to disturb their wild adventures.

Southport RSPB Local group September meeting

A reminder that the next talk is on the usual third Friday of the month, Friday 18 September at Birkdale United Reformed Church, Grosvenor Road, Southport PR8 2ET at 7:45 pm.

Mike Roberts will talk about Merseyside Local Birding

There is limited parking in front of the Hall but plenty of on road parking on Grosvenor Road and Trafalgar Road.

Advance notice that the next Field Trip is on Sunday 11 October. Meet 8am at Hesketh Road Platform for migration watch. Parking on the left-hand side alongside platform or beyond. Then onto Marine Drive Car Park pay and display for the high tide. Note that café and toilets are close by.

Species of the Week!

Warden Nick was thrilled to share the news of the first Hairy Dragonfly to be spotted on the reserve.

The Hairy Dragonfly (Brachytron pratense) is the UK's smallest and yes, hairiest Hawker dragonfly which emerges in May usually before other Hawkers.
The male is dark with blue and green markings, whilst the female is dark with yellow markings.
Hairy Dragonflies are found in wetland areas in south-east and central England, some in south-west Scotland, but not in Lancashire... until now!
