We are two London Plane trees, planted in 1973 in Burgess Hill town centre, now threatened with felling for spurious reasons. Help us to resist!

🌳 What is Urban Tree Canopy β€” and Why It Matters

The urban tree canopy is the layer of leaves and branches that covers a city when viewed from above β€” imagine looking down from a plane and seeing how much green shades the rooftops and roads below.

This canopy is formed by all the trees in a city, whether they grow in parks, line the streets, or thrive in backyards. Together, they make up the urban forest, and their impact is huge.

🌱 Why is it important?
β€’ Cools the city during heatwaves
β€’ Reduces air pollution and improves air quality
β€’ Manages stormwater and prevents flooding
β€’ Boosts biodiversity
β€’ Improves mental and physical health

But this canopy is under pressure. As single-family homes give way to denser housing like laneway houses or triplexes, building footprints grow and tree space shrinks. Yet, it’s a myth that higher-density always means fewer trees β€” tall multifamily buildings often allow for more shared green space and denser canopy than expected.

🌍 Protecting and expanding urban tree canopy is key to building resilient, livable cities.

We hold Zoom meetings, once a month for all our members and anyone who is starting out with campaigning to save trees.

When you start a campaign, you have to learn a lot, really quickly. These meetings are a great way for people who are new to it, to ask questions and for anyone who has a bit more knowledge to share what they know.

We can also share your campaigns or fundraisers with our members.

All members are encouraged to join.

Meetings start at 6pm and finish about 8pm.

Sign up via our website to join and receive the Zoom invite.

Next meeting is Tuesday 1st September.

As towns and cities across the UK face heatwaves and drought this summer, what's becoming increasingly apparent is this: the communities that stand to benefit most from trees are often those with the fewest.

We want to change that.

Since 1993, we've been growing a Movement for Urban Trees and Tree Equity, so that cooler, cleaner, and more beautiful streets are less of a bonus and more of a baseline.

Will you join us in the fight for tree equity?
