Southend in Transition Community Allotment

Southend in Transition Community Allotment We are setting up a community allotment with you where we can meet, grow, eat and treat each other wi People ache for community. People feel better in nature.

Address: Southend East Allotments, Hamstel Road, Soutchchurch Village, Southend on Sea. Map http://goo.gl/JrW0qd

We want to use one of the allotment plots at Southend East Allotment Society site to create a community plot where local residents can come occasionally or regularly to learn new growing skills, interact with each other and nature, save some money by taking some organic produce home an

d then maybe start growing at home or take on their own plot when they have the confidence. Currently there is four of us, all Southend residents who are just at the start of the journey of learning how to grow our own food and work together as a group to meet new people and spend time in a enjoyable way. We will continue to drive this project so you can join in as much or as little as you can afford or have time too:), you are welcome. Due to the way we live now it is hard to make new connections where you live so we hope that our project will bring local people together and forge new connections especially for those who are now isolated. People love to eat fresh, tasty food which is affordable. We hope that by giving them access to the growing skills, equipment and space we can make it easier for all of us to access that food especially if we are on low income. The plot will be their chance to interact with the soil, plants and animals (mostly earth worms:), have the occasional sweat which will improve their mental health and physical well being. On top of it all as it was not enough we believe in the Power of Just Doing Stuff and Little Steps and meeting together, growing food in an organic way and preparing it together contributes to reducing the risk of runaway Climate Change and and builds resilience against Peak oil and Financial Crisis. We are aiming at using reclaimed, donated and recycled materials as much of the time as we can. But we still need to pay for the plots rent, insurance for our organisation and some materials so it would be an encouragement to know that people want to chip in as currently we do not have any funding. In the future we hope to be able to apply for grants to further our work. How you can help:

Innes and Magnus endured the hot tunnel to plant gem lettuce seedlings.
Young Oliver helped on hose duties and kept the hide and seek tradition alive and kicking.. Mogley impressions courtesy.

Kind neighbour Yarric gifted strawberry plants for Innes.

Stephen sheared the grass around beds and fed us Olio delights.

Our Final Allotment Session of the Year 🌱

This was our last session of the year on the allotment, and it felt like a fitting way to round things off β€” active, purposeful, and shared with friends.

We continued the work in the greenhouse, digging into the heavy clay soil and building new beds using twigs from our recent pruning laid at the bottom, topped with our own compost. It means we don’t need nearly as much compost, we reuse the biomass produced on site, and over time those twigs will break down and add valuable organic matter to the beds. A simple, practical example of working with natural systems rather than against them. Thanks to the brilliant effort of Steve and Duncan, we even managed to get started on the second bed.

Dave carried on heroically with the monster composter, shifting hundreds of kilograms of compost into the greenhouse β€” hard graft that will pay dividends in the growing seasons to come.

We paused to snack on apples from the allotment, alongside bananas rescued from going to waste via Olio. I continued pruning some of the taller trees around the site, and the cut material went straight into building up our dead hedge β€” creating a natural barrier against the ever-vigorous blackberry while also providing habitat.

Meanwhile, the girls carried on tidying their tree clubhouse, building swings and making the most of a lovely day outdoors.

A great way to end the year: moving our bodies, caring for the land, and spending time together in the fresh air after the excesses of the holidays.

We’ll be back in the New Year with our fortnightly sessions. Until then, have a wonderful celebration and a very happy New Year 🌿

Community Allotment Session Update 🌱

We were welcomed by a beautiful, sunny day β€” and it was even hotter inside the greenhouse. A proper reminder that the seasons may be turning, but there’s still plenty of energy in the ground and in the group.

Duncan amd Jules cracked on with lifting some of our famously heavy clay soil, while Dave tackled the monster composter, returning our own well-made compost back into the beds. Hard, physical work, but exactly the kind of investment that pays off long-term. We’re even thinking of planting daikon radish next, to help break up the soil pan further and keep improving the structure naturally.

Steven worked through another bed, clearing weeds and preparing it for next season, and collected a good haul of asparagus seeds. We’ll be trialling those and planting them out so we can raise our own asparagus seedlings for the future.

Elsewhere, I dug up plenty of horseradish β€” some set aside for replanting next year, and some destined to become horseradish sauce for the holidays. The rosemary bush was generous too, providing lots of fragrant sprigs to use as a condiment. We pruned and trimmed several trees, including an overgrown crab apple that had been shading a bed β€” it’s now being turned into a proper stool to feature some art maybe?

We also gathered a good bundle of willow, perfect for making Christmas wreaths, and dug up Jerusalem artichokes ready for warming meals and stews.

A full, satisfying day β€” good work, good food, and good company. Exactly what this space is about: coming together, improving the land, and growing food (and friendships) side by side.

Next session Sunday 28/12, last one in 2025!
