Something happened last week that blew us all away. The long awaited results from the 2024 Infant Feeding Survey were published. This is a large scale survey in England run by the Department of Health and Social Care asking mothers about their experiences of feeding their infants.
The results are a treasure trove of information, but the headline results were met with shock, disbelief and joy in the lactation community. More and more families are breastfeeding across almost every demographic category you can imagine.
Even more excitingly, these gains have come predominantly from more people being able to sustain breastfeeding past the initial few days (rather than more people starting).
Although the results are not directly comparable to the previous 2010 survey for various reasons, the size and direction of the impact is undeniable. A rare piece of good news for a change, and a reason to be proud that the hard work we all put in across the UK is having a significant impact.
Lots more work to do, working in this role we still see people day in day out that have been failed by a lack of support and information on their journey.
We dream of a world where every family gets support they need to feed how they want to. Together, we’re here to make that happen.
