As a new LLL Leader back in 2019 Chloe was a huge encouragement when I met her. She took absolute joy meeting my send toddler who was a wriggling giggle monster in the cafe.
As we meet this Thursday in Make&Brew I will be thinking of Chole and her incredible contribution to the Midwifery and breastfeeding world and ready to support families on their journeys.
Verity LLL Leader
We are very sad to hear of the death of Chloe Fisher MBE (1932–2026), a pioneering midwife, breastfeeding specialist and long-standing professional adviser to La Leche League GB.
Chloe’s work helped shape breastfeeding support across the world.
Qualifying as a midwife in 1956 – the same year LLL was founded – she helped establish the Oxford Human Milk Bank in 1974, and set up a pioneering Breastfeeding Clinic. Over a long career she challenged poor practice, traced the origins of misinformation, taught generations of midwives and breastfeeding supporters, contributed to research and publications, and lectured across the UK and internationally.
Chloe also advised La Leche League, the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers and the International Lactation Consultants Association, and was involved in breastfeeding education and policy work nationally and internationally. She was made Vice President of the Royal College of Midwives in 1991 and awarded an MBE in 1996 for services to infant care.
Chloe’s influence can still be felt in the way breastfeeding is understood and supported today. We remember her with deep gratitude and affection, and send our love and condolences to all who knew and worked with her.
