⚓ MVS The Hound Patrol | 20 September 2026

Training day aboard MVS The Hound, a Mitchell 31, for a talented Warsash Cadet and one of our MVS Itchen Volunteer Harbour Coxswains.

All veteran patrol - very good banter.

We started with a refuelling stop at Chessel Bay before aiding Shamrock quay with an enquiry.

The patrol then took us through Dock Head and across the main channel, with useful liaison with VTS, ABP Swift, the Southampton Boat Show safety team and other vessels.

We were asked by ABP Swift to assist with maintaining a safe area around the Southampton Boat Show for leisure craft, while maintaining a good lookout for commercial traffic.

Along the way we recovered floating debris, monitored leisure craft near the commercial berths and had some excellent discussions with other crews.

A particularly useful patrol for developing communication, situational awareness, public relations and cooperation with the many organisations operating on Southampton Water.

MVS Itchen Volunteer Patrol – Sunday 13 September 2026 🚤

After giving the crew briefing at Shamrock Quay, our Warsash cadet took the helm for almost the entire patrol.

We slowed vessels that appeared to be travelling at over 6 knots, removed hazards to the environment and shipping, and checked on the security of moored yachts.

They demonstrated excellent boat-handling skills throughout the patrol, including anchoring at Chessel Bay.

A busy and varied patrol, providing useful support to the harbour master and an excellent opportunity for further practical training. 🚤⚓

Shane -crew completed the engine checks, topped up the oil and headed towards Calshot to practise retrieving a floating marker buoy. After a short break, returned past Dockhead towards Ocean Village. Traffic was light, with a reminder of the speed limit given to a fast-moving motor cruiser leaving the Itchen.

⚓ MVS Itchen Volunteer Patrols – 5 & 6 September 2026

A busy weekend for the MVS Itchen Volunteer Patrol, giving Warsash cadets valuable hands-on experience of Southampton’s busy working port and waterways.

The cadets saw commercial shipping operations close up, including a container ship being escorted by tugs, and attended Ocean Dock following a VTS report of watercraft activity near Arvia. The patrol also removed pieces of driftwood that could present a hazard to leisure craft.

Supporting the Harbour Master and VTS, the crew helped promote safe navigation by offering friendly guidance to water users, including a yacht operating too close to QM2.

Another excellent weekend combining practical seamanship, real-world port operations and valuable experience for the next generation of maritime professionals. ⚓🚢
