🥕 Celebrating local action: Students turning surplus veg into meals for people facing homelessness🥕

We love seeing brilliant community‑led initiatives tackling food waste and food insecurity in Southampton. One inspiring example is Wonky Bowl, a University of Southampton social enterprise where students transform donated “wonky” vegetables into hot, nutritious meals for people experiencing homelessness.

This year alone, the team has cooked more than 1,200 meals, with most going to organisations such as the Two Saints Day Centre. Their aim is simple but powerful: reduce food waste while supporting people who are struggling to access regular meals.

The project relies on a mix of staple ingredients and surplus produce donated by local residents. Every Monday, volunteers gather in the commercial kitchen at Above Bar Church to prepare meals, all fully trained in food hygiene and working in what the team describes as a “professional kitchen”.

Students involved say the experience is extremely rewarding, with many taking on more responsibility as the project grows. The team pours a huge amount of time into keeping the operation running, driven by passion and commitment to supporting the community.

Staff at Two Saints describe the donations as “very appreciated”, especially as demand for support continues to rise. As one staff member put it, “The team at Wonky Bowl bring us food nearly every week, they’re amazing.”

Community‑powered food solutions like this show the impact we can make when we work together to build a fairer, more sustainable food system for all. 💚

🌿 Urban Wild returns to Southampton this May🌿

We’re excited to share that Southampton National Park City is bringing Urban Wild back to Southampton from 23 to 31 May 2026. This week‑long citywide festival celebrates our green and blue spaces, local wildlife and the brilliant communities who make Southampton such a vibrant place to live.
📅 Event link: https://fb.me/e/6JEt44b3P

Urban Wild invites us to explore the nature on our doorstep and rethink what a greener, healthier and more connected city can look like. This aligns closely with the aims of the Southampton Food Partnership. A fair and sustainable food system depends on thriving natural spaces, biodiversity, community connection and opportunities for people to grow, learn and engage with the environment around them.

The organisers are looking for community groups to submit events on the theme of Reimagining Southampton, and we would love to see involvement from our members. Whether you work in food growing, community cooking, sustainability, education, cultural food heritage or creative engagement, there are plenty of ways to take part.

🎉 Our First Year as a Partnership: Building a Healthier, Fairer Food System for Southampton

We’re excited to share our first‑year report, published in October 2025, capturing the incredible progress we’ve made together as a growing movement for healthier, affordable and sustainable food across Southampton.

In just one year, the Southampton Food Partnership has:
• Grown to over 90 members from community groups, charities, public health, academia and local businesses
• Gained formal strategic support from city leaders through the Health and Wellbeing Board in September 2024, strengthening our long‑term vision
• Joined the Sustainable Food Places network in October 2024, giving us access to national expertise and resources to support change locally
• Met bi‑monthly, creating space for collaboration, peer learning and strong connections between members working across the food system
• Completed our first Sustainable Food Places “health check”, scoring 23 out of 36 — a strong score for a brand‑new partnership and a great foundation for growth

We also heard from our members about what matters most for year two and beyond, including:
• Better representation from residents, local businesses and anchor institutions
• Supporting people to lead areas of work aligned with their roles
• Clearer communication about our impact
• Continued co‑ordination to strengthen shared understanding across the city

This report marks an important milestone in Southampton’s journey towards a healthier, fairer and more sustainable food environment.

🌟 New Report: Affordable Food Clubs Strengthening Communities

A new national report from highlights how Affordable Food Clubs are helping households across the UK to improve their diets, strengthen financial security and build stronger community connections.

These clubs sit between traditional food banks and full‑price retail, offering people access to good, nutritious food at low cost while maintaining dignity and choice. They also create welcoming spaces where people can find support, advice and a sense of belonging.

This national learning reinforces what we are seeing here in Southampton. Affordable, community‑led food models play an important role in reducing food insecurity and helping people live well with limited budgets.

💡 Improving access to good food across our region

A new University of Southampton research project, Food Aid Inequality Rectified (FAIR), is working with local councils and food aid services to strengthen food pantries across Southampton, the New Forest and the Isle of Wight.

Food pantries are an increasingly important alternative to food banks, but many struggle with limited supplies and poor‑quality food. The FAIR project aims to change this by:
• Improving the quality of food available in local pantries
• Creating a new online platform to link local suppliers, growers and retailers directly with food pantries, keeping surplus food local and reducing waste
• Working with community researchers who use the pantries themselves to understand what changes people want
• Co‑designing new add‑ons such as cooking sessions and healthier food options, based on pantry users’ needs

By bringing together councils, communities and food aid partners, the project aims to make real, sustainable improvements to local food access and diet‑related health. Brilliant to see research helping shape a more resilient food future. 💚

🌟 Local heroes: Easy Tz Meals CIC

This Southampton non‑profit turns surplus food into hundreds of nutritious meals for local people, supporting schools, families and frontline workers.
Starting during lockdown making meals for 13 people, they now sometimes produce more than 400 meals a day while also preventing food waste.

We love seeing community power in action. ♻️💚
