The Supermarine Spitfire stands as one of the most iconic aircraft ever built — a masterpiece of British engineering and a symbol of courage, resilience, and national pride. Conceived and built in Southampton, the Spitfire played a defining role in the Battle of Britain, where its speed, agility, and revolutionary design helped change the course of the Second World War.

More than an aircraft, the Spitfire has become a living emblem of our nation’s spirit — immortalised in history, film, and memory. It is a lasting tribute to the extraordinary men and women who designed it, built it, maintained it, and flew it in defence of freedom.

The latest edition of FlyPast Magazine features coverage of the spectacular Spitfire 90 Anniversary Tour, celebrating 90 years since the first flight of the iconic Spitfire.

We're especially pleased to see a familiar face (look closely!) featured in the photographs — National Spitfire Project ACE, Rob Day, who was fortunate enough to take to the skies as a passenger during the final leg of the tour.

As Rob has said, his feet still haven't quite touched the ground since the experience!

The Spitfire continues to inspire generations, and it's wonderful to see this milestone anniversary receiving the recognition it deserves in one of the UK's leading aviation publications.

We’re honoured to have the support of renowned tool supplier, Draper Tools through the sponsorship of one of the monument’s roundels.

The roundels form a key part of the National Spitfire Monument's design and symbolise the international legacy of the Spitfire.

Around the outer edge of the monument plinth, 30 roundels will represent the 30 nations that flew the Spitfire during its service life. Each roundel, measuring 75 centimetres in diameter, will display the national insignia used on the aircraft itself — creating a powerful tribute to the global cooperation, courage, and shared history connected to the Spitfire story.

Together, the roundels create a unifying circle around the monument, reflecting how the Spitfire became not just a British icon, but an aircraft admired and flown around the world.

Thank you to Draper Tools for helping support this important tribute to the people and legacy behind the Spitfire.

Honouring More Than “The Few”

While the bravery of the Battle of Britain pilots — “The Few” — is rightly celebrated, the story of the Supermarine Spitfire includes many more unsung heroes.

The National Spitfire Monument will become the first dedicated national tribute to everyone who made the Spitfire a success — from test pilots and ground crews to designers, engineers, mechanics, factory workers and delivery teams, many of whom risked their lives to keep these iconic aircraft flying.

The Spitfire was more than an aircraft. It was the result of innovation, teamwork, determination, and extraordinary people working together under immense pressure.
