Sholing Valleys Study Centre was set up to preserve the area that later became the Miller's Pond Local Nature Reserve.

Spanning around 20 acres, Miller's Pond is one of Southampton's largest and most diverse Local Nature Reserves. Since 1988 Sholing Valleys Study Centre has been working as a registered charity to preserve Miller's Pond and its surrounding areas, whilst educating the public about this unique environment and the wildlife found here. It lies 1.9km from the shores of Southampton Water at Weston Point with which it is connected by over 3 and a half kilometres of continuous valley habitat, the Shoreburs Greenway. Station Road marks the northern edge of the Miller's Pond site and the southern edge is formed by the railway and Portsmouth Road. The valley divides at Miller's Pond and the two branches continue to the north and north-east, to Bursledon Road at Sholing Common and continues up Shoreburs Greenway to Weston Common respectively. The site is owned by Southampton City Council, but managed by Volunteers.

Massive shout-out to the absolute legends that are Big Foot Milling.
Not only did they make sure we had enough chopping boards (using locally cut wood) for our Apple Day, they also etched a special design onto each one. 🍏

Nature Watch were exploring Autumn through poetry today with Master Haiku Poet Elizabeth Dell May.
We enjoyed learning how to write our own nature inspired Haiku poems in the classroom and then went out for an Autumn walk, to use all our senses to engage with nature

There will be a variety of craft stalls selling handmade items, ideal for Christmas gifts.

Toy Tombola, Christmas stall, Raffle

And Father Christmas might even make an appearance 🎅

If you would like to be able to identify trees & shrubs, you will want to join this upcoming session on our site.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust's Community Ecologist Susan Simmonds will be down at Miller's Pond for a morning of recognising a number of native trees and shrubs using key characteristics including leaves, berries and bark.
