How do blind fans watch the World Cup?

If you’ve ever wondered how visually impaired fans follow the beautiful game, it’s all about incredible technology, community, and atmosphere! Here is how they stay right in the action:

• Audio Descriptive Commentary (ADC): Highly detailed, real-time audio describing exactly where the ball is, player body language, and stadium vibes.

• Tech & Apps: From specially designed headsets provided at some stadiums allowing fans to zoom in on the action or watch live TV coverage to phone Apps which sink up with live commentary, technology is making the sport more accessible than ever.

• Tactile Pitch Models & Tech: Mini tactical boards let fans touch and feel the ball's movement in real-time, while smart wearables use vibrations to simulate the action.

• The Power of the Crowd: You don't need sight to feel the energy of 80,000 people. The chants and gasps tell the story perfectly. 🥁🔥

The World Cup isn't just entertainment—it’s a masterclass in values that resonate deeply within the blind community:

• Ultimate Teamwork & Trust: Just like players relying on teammates, navigating the world as a blind person relies heavily on a trusted team—like guide dogs, sighted guides, and supportive communities.

• Clear Communication: Success on the pitch and in an inaccessible world both require clear, precise communication and mutual trust.

• Resilience: When a team goes a goal down, they adapt and fight back. Adapting to a sighted world takes that exact same daily resilience.

Football belongs to everyone.

It’s about passion, community, and the love of the game—no matter how you experience it!

If Artificial Intelligence (AI) has all the answers, why do people still need us?

It's a fair question.

Here at Southampton Sight, we're known for being a friendly bunch. There's usually laughter coming from somewhere, a conversation brewing, and quite often a lunch being planned, served or discussed.

But behind the cups of tea and friendly faces, there is a serious side to what we do.
As AI becomes part of everyday life, you might wonder why anyone would need a service like ours. After all, you can type a question into a computer and get an answer in seconds.

The thing is, sometimes people don't know what question they need to ask.
A skilled advisor can listen. Really listen. They can help someone untangle a problem, understand what is worrying them, and work out what support might actually make a difference.

A skilled advisor can also broaden the conversation. They see the person, not just the problem.

Many people living with sight loss already feel isolated. Some tell us they feel invisible. A conversation with another person can do more than provide information. It can change the course of a day.

And sometimes people need someone in their corner. Someone who can advocate, guide, encourage and help them navigate systems that can feel overwhelming.
Technology is wonderful. We use it too.

But people still need people.

One of our clients said this week, "It helps to be in a different place with different people. It helps the time go by positively."

We couldn't have put it better ourselves.

So we'll keep doing what we do. Going the extra mile. Helping people feel seen, heard and valued.

And yes, probably talking about lunch while we're at it.

Just another brilliant Thursday here at Southampton Sight.

Our children and young people, assisted by the Qualified Teachers of the Visually impaired from Southampton City Council , are having a learning day here at Southampton Sight.

It's Thursday. It's noisy. It's fun. The smell of freshly baked cookies fills the room as everyone gets stuck into cooking, making the most of accessible kitchen aids that help build confidence and independence. Conversations are flowing, scales are being put to good use and are chatting away and skills are growing with every task completed. And of course, no activity here would be complete without a competitive game of Showdown to round things off. Plenty of laughs, a little friendly rivalry and another reminder that independence is built through experiences that are engaging, practical, and enjoyable.

If Thursdays had a fan club, we'd all be members.

Come and join us one day. You know you want to.

Volunteer Week at its very best - Volunteering in action. Awareness in action. Community in action.

Today, the team from Specsavers rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into a whole range of jobs around our centre. From cleaning resources to undertaking the annual stock take their support is making a real difference.

But that was only part of the story.

The day also featured our Cooking Without Looking Bake Off Championships and finished with a lively Showdown Challenge. Throughout the activities, volunteers took part in sight loss awareness experiences including sighted guiding, a blindfold icebreaker challenge and plenty of opportunities to see the world from a different perspective which included an inspirational talk from Tom McInulty and of course the wonderful Toby!

And if you wanted lunch, there was a catch. You had to make it yourself while blindfolded.

There has been plenty of laughter, learning and teamwork, all while raising awareness of sight loss and helping spread the word about the challenges many people face every day.

Volunteering in action. Awareness in action. Community in action.

Can it get any better than this?

The sun is shining at Southampton Sight and that can only mean one thing…. playtime is here!

We are delighted to have a fantastic new play area for our children, created thanks to the generosity and hard work of Level 1 Construction and Overbury.

Corporate partnerships like these make such a difference. They help us go beyond the essentials and create even more opportunities, experiences and services for our members.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in bringing this wonderful space to life. We cannot wait to see it filled with laughter, imagination and plenty of muddy, watery fun this summer.

Who is ready to come and play?

Southampton Sight Squirrels – A springtime reminder of why independence matters

There’s something truly special happening in our garden again this spring. Our Southampton Sight Squirrels have returned to their quiet little retreat, filling the space with all the joy and energy of the season. They’re bustling around, sunbathing on branches, scurrying through the trees, and generally reminding us how wonderful the small things in life can be. But the real magic is in the next generation. The baby squirrels are finally venturing down from their nests, tiny, curious, and learning fast. Their parents are right beside them, teaching them how to leap, how to forage, how to be brave, and how to take those first steps toward independence.

And watching that unfold feels especially meaningful to us.

At Southampton Sight, our mission is to help people with visual impairment build confidence, grow their skills, and live full, independent lives. Seeing these young squirrelets learning from their parents, wobbling at first, then finding their footing, is a beautiful reminder of what independence looks like in all its forms.

Just like these little ones, the people we support are learning, adapting, and discovering their own strengths every day. And we’re here to walk alongside them, offering guidance, tools, and encouragement until they’re ready to leap forward on their own.

So, as we watch our fluffy friends grow into adulthood and head off into the trees, we can’t help but smile. Independence, whether squirrel sized or human sized, is something worth celebrating.

Thank you to the Northwood String Orchestra!

Southampton Sight is very grateful to the Northwood String Orchestra for choosing us as their charity partner for their 100th anniversary concert on Saturday.

What makes this even more special is that at their very first concert in 1926, Southampton Sight was also their chosen charity. Nearly 100 years later, that connection continues — a wonderful reflection of Southampton’s rich community history.

It is heartening to see local groups not only survive, but thrive, while continuing to support one another. That sense of community is what makes Southampton such a special city with something for everyone.

Thank you to the Northwood String Orchestra and everyone who supported the concert and Southampton Sight.
