Did you know that air pollution is the biggest environmental risk to our health?

Reducing levels of harmful air pollution in our communities has immediate health benefits for us all, and helps both children and adults live longer and healthier lives.

That’s why we’re supporting Global Action Plan's Clean Air Day again this year. Here’s how you can reduce your exposure to air pollution ⤵️

📍 Use Southampton City Council's Airmap to plan a local active travel route along quieter paths. This nifty little tool even tells you how much you’ll reduce your exposure to pollution compared to other widely used routing apps: https://shorturl.at/6rWzQ

🚌 Choose active and sustainable transport with the My Journey Hampshire planning tool. From live bus and rail departures to the latest discount codes, this resource makes healthier living both practical and easy: https://shorturl.at/AKMLB

🔥 Find alternatives to bonfires, because garden waste has so much to give! https://shorturl.at/qNeVk

👋 Get involved with Clean Air Day at Southampton Bargate today, Thursday, 18th June 2026 from 1.30pm - 5.30pm. We’ll be there along with the city council, Bluestar, Voi, the University of Southampton, Tranquil City and other organisations working hard to make Southampton a cleaner, healthier city to live and work: https://shorturl.at/uaD0a

🏡 Choose clean home heating on those chilly winter evenings. Summer is a great time to carry out home upgrades, and we’re here to help: https://lnkd.in/em-KWBJ4

We've spoken to a Southampton client who has ditched the gas boiler and opted for an air source heat pump to keep her 1920s home nice and cosy.

Here's what she had to say about those all-important first steps ⬇️

The UKHSA in conjunction with the Met Office has issued an Amber Heat Health Alert weather warning for the period between 10am on 26/05/2026 and 5pm on 28/05/2026 across the South East of England.

Here at the Environment Centre (tEC), we are:

☀️ Offering vulnerable residents personalised advice and guidance for managing their health and wellbeing at home during a heatwave.

☀️ Helping residents understand how they can alter their home’s temperature through effective use of windows, blinds and curtains.

☀️ Signposting residents to specialised services (e.g health services) where appropriate.

☀️ Assessing clients' eligibility for financial support to make their home more resilient to extreme temperatures in the long run.

☀️ Assessing whether a client's home might be suitable for solar panels.

If you'd like to make a referral on behalf of someone struggling to manage at home during a heatwave, please get in touch. We'll do all we can to support those in need.

This April, we're celebrating My Home Made Better's first birthday 🎉

My Home Made Better has quickly become the region’s trusted advice service for homeowners looking for free, impartial guidance for futureproofing their home energy.

From phone calls to home visits, community events to webinars, our energy advisers have delivered more than 2,000 advice interactions across Hampshire, Southampton and Portsmouth.

It’s been a year full of new ideas, positive conversations and happy clients!

The service has also inspired more than 50 residents to become Energy Champions – a voluntary role to promote the benefits of a one-to-one consultation.

In fact, our fantastic volunteers have helped us reach an additional 1,500 residents!

If you've been meaning to book a chat with the My Home Made Better team, it's not too late to get started.

Simply email [email protected] or call 0800 804 8601 to book an appointment.

🏡 Volunteer opportunity 🏡

Do you know someone who could be a My Home Made Better Energy Champion this spring?

We’re looking for volunteers to join us during this exciting, crucial point in the My Home Made Better calendar.

The Energy Champion role is flexible to suit individual preferences, skills and availability. An Energy Champion could:

📢 Promote My Home Made Better by putting posters up, giving out leaflets, posting on social media or speaking to groups in their local community.

👋 Join a local retrofit adviser at a public event.

🏡 Invite others to see the changes they’ve made in their own home. (Open Homes are organised and insured by the My Home Made Better team).

Why now?

The warmer months are an important part of the My Home Made Better calendar. Our clients are ready to talk, plan, and head outdoors to the summer events we’ll be attending!

In addition, some of our audience will have had a thermal imaging survey carried out during the winter. It’s essential that we offer these residents the next step on their home energy efficiency journey.

Training

We ask our Energy Champions to complete a two-hour, online training session, usually held in an evening. During the session, attendees will learn about whole-house retrofit and the different ways to improve energy efficiency at home.

We’ll also introduce the My Home Made Better service, what it can offer homeowners, and how volunteers can get involved in hours that suit their interests and availability.

Ready to learn more?

If you, or someone you know, is interested in becoming a My Home Made Better Energy Champion, please get in touch by emailing [email protected].

We look forward to welcoming you to the team!

In a largely digital world, there's something very special about printed literature 💛

This double page spread in New Forest District Council's Hometalk magazine has reached tenants and leaseholders across the district this winter.

The article raises awareness of Hampshire County Council's Hitting the Cold Spots service that helps residents stay warm and well at home. Delivered by us here at tEC, we help to repair or replace broken boilers, connect residents with priority energy services, and offer advice on accessing additional support services.

Did you know that loft insulation can stop up to 25% of heat escaping through the roof?

Or that around a third of all heat lost in uninsulated homes escapes through the walls?

These home improvements can make a significant difference to the comfort, cost and energy efficiency of a home, yet many households are simply unable to afford the work.

We’re bridging the gap with Southampton Healthy Homes by linking residents with funding streams, reputable installers, and support services that help make these large measures possible.

The results speak for themselves:

🏡 Homes are warmer
🏡 Bills are lower
🏡 Carbon emissions are reduced

But most importantly, residents are happier, healthier, and feel more positive about the future 🧡

Southampton Healthy Homes is funded by Southampton City Council as part of its commitment to making sure every resident lives in a good quality, safe and warm home.

It's a pleasure to bring this service to life for our callers!
