If you’re managing damp and mould in your home, you’re not alone. Here are some key factors to consider ⤵

🏠 Heating: Make sure your heating is adequate. Warmer rooms are less likely to suffer from condensation.

🏠 Insulation: Insulated walls are warmer, meaning moisture is less likely to condense.

🏠 Ventilation: Allow moisture to escape by opening windows and using air vents.

🏠 Excess moisture: Reduce the amount of moisture in the area. Keep lids on pans and try not to dry clothes indoors.

DIY SOS: The big build 🔨

Did you catch last night's episode of DIY SOS?

Southampton couple, Ahmed and Rifat, featured on the show after a rogue builder began work on an extension that was later deemed unsafe. The two parents are profoundly deaf and communicate with their three young children using British Sign Language.

The show’s producers contacted our Southampton Healthy Homes team for help with turning the family’s situation around. We’re pleased to have secured funding that contributed to the property’s new solar panels, heating system and glazing.

Southampton Healthy Homes, the city’s affordable warmth service, helps homeowners access vital energy upgrades that are otherwise unaffordable.

The service recognises that households with disabilities and health conditions have unique challenges when it comes to keeping their home at a comfortable temperature. In 2025/26, it facilitated more than 240 large energy efficiency installations across the city.

Highlights from a recent case study ⤵

This Hampshire resident is bedbound and their energy bills were based on inaccurate overestimates. They had old meters at the property and their gas meter was broken.

We got straight to work and secured these top three outcomes:

1️⃣ £900 credit refunded after a long-term dispute.

2️⃣ Gas and electric meters swapped to smart meters.

3️⃣ £120 in compensation to the client.

☀️ Notice where the sun comes in at different times of the day. Close curtains or blinds to block the sunlight.

☀️ On very hot days, when it’s hotter outside than inside, close your windows during the day.

☀️ If it’s safe to do so, open windows, curtains and blinds in the evening and early morning when the air is cooler. Opening doors between rooms will help create a through draught.

☀️ If you’re using an electric fan, place it in front of an open window in the evening to push cooler air into the room.

☀️ Keep your sleeping area well ventilated.

☀️ If you have a garden, remember that trees and shrubs will provide natural cooling.

How to keep your home cool ⤵️

☀️ Take note of where the sun comes in at different times of the day. Close curtains or blinds to block the sunlight and stop it heating your home.

☀️ On very hot days, when it’s hotter outside than inside, close your windows during the day. This might seem counterintuitive, but it will stop hot air filling up your home.
