On our final day in Paris we took part in the “Rethinking Underwater Cultural Heritage: integrating living heritage safeguarding into ocean and inland waters’ management” Exchange Day where we attended presentations on the importance of intangible heritage within UCH. It was a very stimulating and inspiring event! We’ll put into practice these principles and promote the significance of intangible heritage in the coming months, when we will be building on the recommended actions developed with the Jamaican Ministry of culture, gender, entertainment and sport, statutory agencies and local organisations after the Sunken Secrets of the Caribbean event in March. The initiative was presented to stakeholders and the UNESCO Secretariat in the Paris headquarters last week and if you would like to know more about it, you can visit this dedicated section on the Accredited NGOs’ website: https://2001convention-uch.ngo/sunken-secrets/

On Wednesday 10 June we were in Paris attending The Scientific and Technical Advisory Body to the 2001 Convention Statutory meetings. We had the opportunity to showcase our involvement in delivering projects and initiatives supporting the Convention and engaging experts and local communities with Underwater Cultural Heritage. We also discussed our involvement in the delivery of the Plan for Action on the Climate Change and UCH White Paper. This is a five year strategy towards which we will be contributing with exciting and innovative initiatives. To know more about our initiatives and those of the other Accredited NGOs you can have a look at our website: https://2001convention-uch.ngo/

Last Tuesday we attended the 2001 Convention Statutory meetings of the UNITWIN Network and of the Accredited NGOS Network, which the Maritime Archaeology Trust are currently Chair. It was an exciting opportunity to present and showcase the initiatives and projects we have been delivering in support of the Convention to protect and promote Underwater Cultural Heritage. We also strengthened our connections with members and partners in the UNITWIN Network to keep researching and safeguarding UCH around the world. Stay tuned for exciting developments in the coming months as new projects are launched.

It's World Ocean Day! 🌊⛵⚓

The sea shapes our coasts, connects our communities, and preserves countless stories from the past beneath the waves. From shipwrecks and submerged landscapes to the wildlife that thrives around them, our oceans hold a rich and fragile heritage worth protecting.

This World Ocean Day, we're celebrating the ocean's role in our shared history and looking ahead to a future where both our marine environment and maritime heritage can continue to be explored, understood, and cared for.

We are proud to be championing the UN Ocean Decade

Diving on Bouldnor Cliff has started up again this year! 🤿

At Bouldnor, the erosion of the seabed reveals new stone tools, or lithics, every year. After a long and stormy winter there were many to uncover. These are now being incorporated into our larger investigations of the site. 🔎

The two days on the boat this past week were made better by two things: the sun was out🌞, and we were joined by two artists collecting photographs and soundscapes for an upcoming exhibition on the Isle of Wight. Our underwater chatter and tanks clanging hopefully made for an immersive setting to bring to their design!
