Discovery Sailing Project

Discovery Sailing Project Discovery Sailing Project is a charity who provides offshore sailing adventures to all.

We take hundreds of people to sea each year enabling everyone to experience the thrill and challenge that offshore sailing provides. We are a voluntary organisation taking young people between the ages of 12 and 25 for sailing adventures. Run by volunteers who skipper and crew the boats and help carry out important maintenance tasks. We own three yachts:

1.Discovery DSP
Discovery is a purpose bui

lt 43ft Sea Stream which accommodates twelve people in comfortable cabins. She has completed in numerous International Tall Ships Races and is the flag ship of Discovery Sailing Project.

2.Thermopylae Clipper
Thermopylae is a Clipper 60 from the original round the world fleet. She accommodates fifteen people to give real hands on experience of sailing an exciting ocean going yacht, and has enabled us to expand on the number of people we take sailing every year.

3.Alexander Fairey
Alexander Fairey was funded by the Alexander Fairey Memorial Fund who continue to support and help maintain this excellent training yacht. At 34ft, this yacht provides an excellent platform for younger project members to take their first steps as a Skipper.

For anyone who missed it, David Wallder and Liz Fricker have officially conquered a jaw-dropping 100m abseil down the Spinnaker Tower! And here’s the best part—they both have a fear of heights… yet still stepped up, leaned over the edge, and did it anyway. That’s real courage.

Their motivation? A shared passion for the Discovery Sailing Project, giving young people through Sailing. Through their volunteering, they see first-hand the confidence, joy, friendships, and unforgettable memories that sailing with the Discovery Sailing Project creates - and that impact on young lives it is truly priceless.

If you haven’t had a chance to donate yet, there’s still plenty of time to get involved. Every contribution helps make future voyages possible and keeps these life-changing experiences going strong.

A huge thank you to everyone who has already supported—you’re making a real difference.

If you’d like to cheer their efforts and help push them closer to their fundraising goal, you can donate here:

🎉 **Big Hearts. Big Heights. Big Splash for Discovery Sailing Project!** 🌊🧗‍♀️

Two fearless members of our **DSP dream team** - David Wallder and Liz Fricker — are taking fundraising to new heights… literally!

They’re gearing up to abseil down the iconic Spinnaker, on 19th April 2026; swapping solid ground for sheer adrenaline, all in support of the Discovery Sailing Project.

This isn’t just a leap of bravery — it’s a powerful show of commitment to giving more people the chance to experience the freedom, confidence, and joy that sailing brings.

From harnesses and helmets to nerves of steel, David and Liz are stepping right out of their comfort zones so DSP can keep changing lives on the water.

Every metre they descend represents opportunity, adventure, and inclusion — and every donation helps keep those sails flying. 💙⛵

So cheer them on, share the love, and if you can, support their epic descent for an incredible cause.

This weekend saw the Projects annual AGM and Reunuon.

33 members from Discovery plus 6 from the Docklands Project joined with 22 Watch Leaders to embark on courses, making new friendships and memories.

Lots of Long service awards, which included one for Mike Hudson getting his 60 yr award.

There were two Outstanding Service awards. Firstly Nick Nell, who has been a trustee, initially as the Project Chair, more recently as Treasurer and has been key to keeping the Project finances on track. Next, Ian Rowlands for running the major refit on Thermopylae last year more or less single handedly.

The weekend also saw several courses run.

2x RYA First Aid Course. 17 people completed

1x RYA Diesel Engine course. 13 people completed

1x RYA SRC (VHF) Course .8 people completed

1x RYA Power Boat L2. 5 people completed

Massive thanks to Docklands Sailing Project for hosting. Fiona for the fabulous food - it was outstanding. And all the other volunteers who helped make this an amazing weekend!

Things are looking extremely positive for the year ahead. If you've not booked on for sailing with us, we would suggest being as quick as possible; as weekends and week long sails are booking up fast.

Keep watching for more updates.
