The icing on the cake πŸŽ‚

Grace joined Eliashib Restoration Organization , Zambia, as a tailoring trainee in 2019. She completed her training and started earning money from her sewing skills.

Then Grace wondered how she might make money between tailoring jobs. She decided, "Whenever I don't have customers for sewing, I can make cakes."

Grace perfected her baking skills and began selling her creations. She currently runs a successful tailoring business which she has expanded into cake baking and event dΓ©cor services.

This year Grace has returned to Eliashib as an instructor; she is passing on her baking skills to our current cohort of catering trainees.

By using her tailoring, baking and cake decorating skills, Grace has diversified her income and is able to support her family. She told us, "Where my husband isn’t working, it's through these skills that I am able to care for my household and children."

Planning a challenge this year?

Whether it’s running a marathon, climbing a mountain, giving up chocolate for a month, hosting a bake sale, organising a sea swim, or simply doing something that pushes you a little outside your comfort zone, why not make it count for something bigger too?

At Tools for Self Reliance, the money raised through personal challenges helps provide vocational training to communities across Africa. It gives people the chance to learn a trade, earn an income, and create opportunities that last.

🧁Every step, swim, climb, cake baked, or mile covered can help someone take the first step towards a brighter working future.

You can set up a JustGiving page or create a Facebook Fundraiser and support a cause with long-lasting impact.

πŸ’š As comes to an end, we'd like to say a special thank you to all of our volunteers, past and present who have given us over 8000 years of their support in the last 45 years.

Over the past year alone, the hard work of volunteers allowed us to send 10,240 refurbished tools to our projects in Malawi and Zambia. This level of commitment and generosity enables us to help change the lives of the trainees we work with.

Here's a few words from CEO Sarah, and Volunteer Coordinator Ben...

Today we're hearing from Mark, one of our workshop volunteers, who has been with us for 5 years.

πŸ’š Mark's chosen word, to describe volunteering is - Satisfying.

"I find volunteering at Tools for Self Reliance very satisfying. It's rewarding to know that the tools we refurbish can help people in challenging situations gain skills, earn a living and improve their lives.

On a personal level, volunteering also keeps me active and gives me a reason to get out and do something worthwhile each week. It's a great feeling to know that the time you give is helping others while giving you something back too."

And it's a HUGE 'thank you' to our volunteers, from our partner Street Girls AID in Ghana!🩷🩷🩷
